Emergency Care Support Worker  -Experienced

You will assist a Paramedic or Technician/Ambulance Associate Practitioner in providing ambulance aid and drive under emergency blue light conditions when required. Support will be on hand from your first line manager and your crew mates. You will be enrolled on a Clinical Conversion (CC) course.

Please Note: This opportunity is for the named location and we would shortlist those within a 45-minute commute.  If you do not hold a current C1 entitlement on your licence, you will be required to obtained the C1 entitlement in order to start. 

Main duties of the job

  • A full and current driving licence, held for at least one year, with no more than three penalty points. A Group 2 standard DVLA medical will  be required and there are restrictions for minimum uncorrected eye-sight as part of this test, please refer to the DVLA for further guidance.
  •  full C1 (manual) category on driving licence. 

    If you do not hold a current C1 , you will be required to obtain the C1 entitlement  in order to start.

  • Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance driving 

  • 2 year  front line ambulance experience as ECA or ECSW
  • Able to pass an occupational specific fitness test and pre-employment medi.
  • Please note, all qualifications will need to be verified by the candidate producing original copies of certificates. If you have misplaced your certificates, please request copies from the relevant examination board and upload a statement detailing this to the application form as required

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To succeed in this role, you must have a genuine desire to serve the local community, demonstrate excellent communication skills, utilise your initiative and common sense and remain calm under pressure, whilst providing a patient-focused approach with a caring and empathetic nature. 

Respond to emergency, urgent and routine calls, usually working as part of a two-person ambulance crew, employing techniques in line with scope of practice and associated training as directed and in accordance with Trust protocols and guidance.

In exceptional circumstances provide a first solo response to emergency calls, in accordance with the Trust’s Deployment Plan.

Act as a secondary response to single responder vehicles, conveying patients as directed.

Support qualified practitioners, as directed, in the provision of high quality care.

Observe patient vital signs using skills and equipment relevant to scope of practice and reporting any changes to the qualified practitioner. 

Ensure that all procedures used within the scope of practice are consistent with and promote good infection control.

Ensure that required equipment is stored, transported and cared for so that it is always in good working order.

Maintain regular communication with the Emergency Operations Centre, to register updates regarding cancellation and mobility requirements.

Maintain a working knowledge of and operate all required types of communication equipment (including radio, telephone and MDTs) in accordance with Trust protocols to convey accurate information about emergency and routine work and patient information to NHS staff and those from other services as appropriate.

Drive all types of approved ambulance service vehicles under normal and emergency (blue light) circumstances, in accordance with the laid down standards of the service and within road traffic law, taking particular care of the vehicle, its occupants and other road users. 

Work with others and use available equipment to ensure the safe manual handling and movement of patients.

Comply with all Trust policies and procedures as they apply to this post.

Essential criteria
  • Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance driving and Valid Emergency Driving qualification.
  • At least2 year on a front line ambulance experience as ECA or ECSW
  • C1 Licence
