Job overview
We are seeking to recruit a passionate, knowledgeable and dynamic Specialist Mental Health Practitioner to join the well-established and innovative Youth Offending Service. We welcome applications from Senior Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Systemic therapist, Art therapist and Child Psychotherapists. Experience of working with children and young people is essential for this role.
As a specialist mental health practitioner, your goal is to offer face to face treatment to children, using an assertive outreach approach, whilst providing support, consultation and advice to the wider Youth Justice Service. Working with children and families who have multiple and complex needs you will respond to these flexibly and creatively to get the best outcomes. The post sits alongside other mental health specialists in the Therapeutic and Family Interventions Team within the broader Youth Justice Service.
You will be joining a friendly, supportive and creative multi-disciplinary team, dedicated to providing a high-quality service in liaison/partnership with other key young people's services. You will be an empathetic person understanding that children who commit offences often have complex lives and needs which challenge their access to services.
Main duties of the job

As a Mental Health Practitioner in our team you will provide a range of interventions for children and young people referred into the service. This will take place in children and young people’s homes or in community venues. Our team is responsible for covering all of West Sussex, working across home, school and community settings. You will have the flexibility to manage your workload in the community and respond flexibly to the needs of children. Contributing to the management of a team caseload of clients with complex needs, you will assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions, which will be delivered mainly in the home or community setting. You will work in partnership with, and support the work of, a child’s broader professional network. |

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This role:
- The role will be based in Bridge House Worthing, though requests to work from Horsham or Bognor are also workable
- You will be expected to travel around the county and a car driver is essential. Travel expenses away from base will be reimbursed
- This part time role of 15 hours and the candidate can select when their working days. Thursdays would be desirable to allow for the Team meetings.
West Sussex Youth Justice Service is a multi-disciplinary team which seeks to prevent offending and reoffending by children and young people aged 10 -17. The service works with children, young people, their families, victims of youth crime and the broader community across the county using restorative principles and a trauma lens to reduce risk and increase desistence. The service was rated overall Good in the 2022 HMIP inspection with staffing rated “outstanding”; the Inspection report noting that “Staff within the YJS are empowered to deliver a high-quality, personalised and responsive service for all children”.
REQUIREMENTS
In order to be a successful Mental Health Practitioner in our team you will be:
- Registered with the NMC or HCPC via a core professional qualification – Applications are welcomed from OT’s, Nurses, Social Workers, Drama/Art Therapists, Psychologists
- Experienced in risk management
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced and varied role
- Experienced working within a mental health setting
It would also be advantageous if you are:
- Experienced working in CAMHS (Children and Young People’s mental health services)
Flexibility with working patterns to include some meetings is essential – as is own transport as the role involves travel across the whole Sussex County area. SPFT staff have the capacity to work from home remotely for part of their hours where applicable and in agreement with your line manager.
MAIN DUTIES
- To contribute to the management of a team caseload of clients with complex needs, using CPA principles, evidence based/client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
- To hold a case-load as Lead Practitioner and attend a range of professional meetings about those cases
- To, provide specialist assessment and intervention as part of a multi-disciplinary approach, with specific focus on preventing offending and reoffending
- To provide risk screening and assessment as well as risk management planning
- To contribute to and facilitate evidence-based assessments and individual and group interventions
- To contribute to the maintenance and development of the Service
- To regularly share and supervise students on practice placement, and junior staff as appropriate
Clinical
- To contribute to the management of a team caseload of clients with complex needs, using CPA principles, evidence based/client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.

Essential criteria

- Completion of Mentorship Course/ENB equivalent
