Job overview

Plans and provides programmes of therapeutic activities tailored to service users in low-secure inpatient as laid out by a qualified Occupational Therapist

Uses technical/creative skills to assist in the provision of a flexible client-centred programme of therapeutic activities for individuals/groups of clients who experience mental health difficulties and have offending behaviours. This will involve supervising and working with patients on a one: one basis, either in a secure ward environment, the local community or the person’s home

Main duties of the job

Implements and evaluates delegated OT interventions for patients/clients relating to their treatment programme this may include:

  • Home/environmental assessments: support home/environmental based assessment as required with qualified OT
  • Health and fitness activities: sport and fitness activities, indoor and outdoor, both on the unit and in the community.
  • Living skills: e.g. meal planning, cooking, budgeting, health education.
  • Social skills: e.g. discussion groups, communication groups, orientation to the community
  • Education: information, technology, literacy, numeracy
  • Cognitive skills: e.g. use of specific activity to develop concentration, memory cognition, problem solving sequencing and occupational competence.
  • Recreation/leisure activities: promoting the use of community resources: gardening, voluntary work skills, art, music etc.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We're excited to offer this role, it offers high job satisfaction and so has not been available for some time!

Forensic Occupational Therapy is a specialism, assessments and intervention are undertaken to contribute directly to developing the multidisciplinary teams perceptions for ongoing and emerging needs. As an occupational therapy technical instructor you will directly contribute to this using a variety of methods, activities and practical skills.

You will be supported to adopt a relational approach to maximise continuation of the therapeutic alliance and the relational security.

Service users receive input from Occupational Therapy at the earliest opportunity on their forensic pathway. 

Outcomes are continually measured and evaluated with the service user and at clinical meetings, establishing the effectiveness of the treatment offered and identifying any additional needs.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • • NVQ level 3 or equivalent (2 A-levels, AVCE, BTEC National, Certificate) in relevant subject
  • • Working toward or has current Uk Driving license
Desirable criteria
  • Health and fitness qualification
  • evidence of relevant further learning and development e.g group facilitation cert, nutrition etc

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Mental health experience
  • Knowledge and experience of occupational therapy practice
  • Knowledge of working in a secure forensic mental health setting
