Consultant Obstetrician - interest in Maternal Medicine

Job overview

We are looking for an substantive Obstetrician with a special interest in Maternal Medicine and High risk pregnancies. In particular we would like to invite anyone with an interest in diabetes antenatal care to apply. 

A key element of this role is to support the existing multidisciplinary diabetes in pregnancy care team and to support the delivery of in situ multidisciplinary Obstetric simulation and our inhouse Practical Obstetric Multi-professional Training PROMPT.

The job will also include a regular caesarean section list, a weekday antenatal ward round and a weekly session with our Ambulatory Care Unit.

The successful candidate would be expected to be link Obstetrician for one of our community midwifery teams and would join a friendly, motivated and dynamic department.

 

This post will also provide regular consultant led antenatal ward rounds to ensure consultant decision making for high risk inpatient obstetric patients as well as having regular sessions dedicated to the ambulatory Obstetric areas and ideally help with managing the fetal wellbeing service. Our Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC) and Antenatal Day Unit ( ANDU) review and manage high risk women and the workload is highly variable but we see on average 1400 women per month through these areas.

Main duties of the job

There are daily consultant led obstetric ward rounds and elective Caesarean section lists as well as consultant presence in the Maternity Assessment Centre ( MAC)and Antenatal Day Unit (ANDU) to ensure patient safety and timely patient review and management.   As well as general antenatal clinics, there are also a wide range of existing specialist high risk antenatal clinics for women with diabetes, haematological problems, perinatal mental health problems, multiple pregnancy, infectious diseases, epilepsy with support also for women requiring dietetic and healthy lifestyle advice and a pregnancy related bereavement support team.

All Obstetric services are delivered at the Bradford Royal Infirmary site.

The Trust is a teaching centre for the University of Leeds School of Medicine and the department has a good reputation for providing high quality undergraduate and postgraduate education and training, with ATSM training offered in most modules. Successful applicants will be expected to contribute to these teaching programmes. There is also a strong emphasis on clinical research and a high calibre research group within the unit. 

In addition to regular daytime sessions, Consultants in the department work flexible clinical sessions to prospectively cover caesarean section lists and clinics. The job plan will include a mix of fixed and flexible sessions. 

 

Working for our organisation

There are 23 Consultant posts in the department; 14 Consultant Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, 3 Consultant Obstetrician and 3 Consultant Gynaecologists. 

The Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust serves a female population of approximately 250,000 and there are around 5400 births per year in the unit. Approximately 50% of our women are from an ethnic background, mainly from Pakistan and India.

Despite having a high-risk obstetric population, our delivery statistics and clinical outcomes are consistently good with a normal vaginal birth rate of approximately 67% and a caesarean section rate of around 23%.

Bradford is a busy and vibrant city located in the centre of the UK with easy access by car, train or air. The city has a wide variety of leisure and shopping facilities and a major new shopping and leisure outlet in the city centre has recently opened. There is a good range of affordable housing within the city and in the surrounding areas and many high performing schools and specialist academies in the area. The city is a short drive or steam train journey away from the famous Yorkshire Dales, home to the Bronte sisters, the Railway Children and Emmerdale and, more recently, Le Grand Depart in the Tour de France and other large cycling events. An area of outstanding national beauty with excellent cycling and walking available on the doorstep helps maintain a high quality of life.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

There will be an on call Obstetric commitment with this post which will include joining the existing on call consultants on a 1:12/17 rota. There is a separate consultant on call 24 hours a day for both Obstetrics and Gynaecology.  The appointment will allow us to maintain our capacity to deliver 98 hours of resident consultant labour ward cover per week. 

The consultant presence on labour ward is delivered throughout the week, with a consultant on site 08:00-22:00 each day.   A hot week labour ward consultant provides labour ward cover 0800-1700 5 days a week and each week night is covered by different consultants arriving in the unit at 1700 and being present in the unit from 1700-2200.  After 22:00, on call consultant cover is delivered on a non-resident basis. 

The successful candidate will be mMOET trained and be able to contribute to supporting and running the multidisciplinary Obstetric emergency training and in situ drills within the unit with dedicated time to ensure delivery of this training as dictated by the recent Ockenden requirements.

Applications will be welcomed from all suitably qualified Obstetricians. Experience in Obstetrics and in Labour Ward care is essential as demonstrated by having completed the Advanced Labour Ward Practice ATSM.

Evidence of completion of the High Risk pregnancy ATSM would also be desirable. Specific experience in delivering antenatal clinics aimed at managing diabetes in pregnancy.

Evidence of obstetric scanning skills and competence in scanning for fetal growth and fetal dopplers would also be desirable.

Competence with performing ECVs would also be desirable.

The Womens Clinical Service Unit launched the Outstanding Maternity Services programme of work in August 2020 which was an initial 2 year programme of work focussing on 5 key areas where improvements and developments were needed in order to become an outstanding service, this journey of quality improvement is now embedded throughout the service.  Candidates would be actively encouraged to contribute and hold a role within quality improvement work.

Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and be on the Specialist Register or within six weeks of acquiring CCT on the time of interview.
