Clinical Specialist Interventional Sonographer

Job overview

This post requires an experienced sonographer with additional interventional skills, in their area of expertise,  to work as part of the radiology team delivering a high quality patient service.

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an autonomous clinical practitioner working independently. They will be responsible for carrying out interventional diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures in their own area of expertise.

They will be expert in their area and part of the ultrasound senior leadership team managing staff on a day to day basis when necessary.

Together with the radiology consultants and Principal superintendent, they will work to promote the service and develop policy and procedure, instigating and carrying out audit when appropriate. 

The post holder will provide support, training, supervision and competency assess trainees, qualified Sonographers, and registrars.

 They will provide a consultancy and advisory function to the MDT utilising expert knowledge and skills. They will provide a teaching and education service to students, medical and nursing staff.

The post holder will be active on the rota to cover their own patient lists and provide planned and reactive cover for consultant lists when required.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial post qualification experience in a wide range of ultrasound including a specialised area and interventional techniques
  • Knowledge and experience in scanning and issuing reports on a wide range of ultrasound including a specialised area, recording findings in patient records
  • Experience in performing ultrasound guided interventional and therapeutic procedures
  • Experience of research and audit processes and interpretation of results to alter practice
  • Experience in developing guidelines and implementing changes to patient care pathways within the trust and regionally
  • Experience of working within and contributing to a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience in clinical teaching and presentations to a group
  • Evidence of CPD and clinical governance.
  • Experience in Quality Assurance through audit.
  • Experience of conducting and managing Appraisals of junior team members
  • Experience in recruitment selection and interviewing
  • Experience in handling complaints and managing grievances, in accordance with trust policies.
  • Experience in dealing with and reporting of risks using the online register. In accordance with RIDDOR
  • Experience in managing the training and shadowing of a wide scope of students e.g. work experience, radiography students, radiology registrars etc

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work under pressure with a calm caring professional attitude with good organisational skills.
  • Confidence and ability to problem solve with a positive flexible attitude
  • Experience in teaching AHPs and medical staff to include clinical training and presentations, in line with higher education institutes.
  • Willing to undergo further training identified depending on the department needs
  • Ability to assess patient needs and plan, implement and evaluate care appropriately, including the appropriate aftercare.
  • Can identify areas for improvement and implement changes as required using evidence based practice.
  • Experience in clinical procedures requiring a high level of precision for instance interventional procedures such as therapeutic joint injections, biopsy, lithotripsy or cervical catheter placement.
  • Ability to interpret complex findings and implement these to plan further patient management including recommendations for further imaging or treatment
  • Good communication skills and experience in delivering complex, sensitive information to patients and relatives and gaining consent for procedures.
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of available imaging platforms and I.T systems to facilitate good patient care and record taking e.g. CRIS, EI, EPR, Viewpoint, XeroViewer etc
  • Good I.T skills and knowledge of latest equipment development
  • Awareness of budget implications and the effective use of resources

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Advanced Sonographer Practitioner skills e.g. biopsies, FNAs, therapeutic injections, CEUS, catheter insertion and drainages
  • Management of patients presenting for radiological intervention / examination
  • In depth specialist knowledge of ultrasound and current best practice
  • Knowledge and experience of ultrasound reporting requirements
  • Knowledge of policies relating to consent and medico-legal aspects of the role
  • Knowledge of prescribing and administering medicines
  • Understands the limits of the job role. Has the knowledge to recognise situations that require reporting and demonstrates the ability to escalate to a senior person where appropriate.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma of the college of Radiographers, BSc in Radiography, or equivalent.
  • PGDip in medical ultrasound / DMU
  • Post Graduate Cerificate in extended practice in own area of expertise.
  • Mentorship/teaching qualification/registration
  • Demonstrates CPD/ Portfolio of evidence to support clinical practice
  • HCPC/ NMC Registration
