Job overview

The post holder will assist the Named Nurse for Children Looked After and Care Leavers to carry out operational responsibilities as set out in Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018 and the Intercollegiate Documents 2019/ 2020, in the application and development of the local and national agenda for Children Looked After (CLA) and Care Leavers (CL). 

To work as part of the Children’s Looked After and Care Leavers team in which the Specialist Nurse role is integral to delivering the statutory health needs assessment process to (CLA) and  (CL’s) in the care of Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council (CMBC) and those placed in the local area from external local authorities. Incorporated in the duties undertaken are the promoting and enabling of CLA and CL’s to achieve their optimum outcomes for health and wellbeing.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced practitioner with a commitment to Children Looked After and Care Leavers to work as part of the Integrated Children Looked After; Children’s and Adults Safeguarding Team.

The post holder will work closely with all levels of staff in CHFT and with statutory and voluntary agencies in order to continue to develop safe effective practice with CLA and CL, by providing advice and support to colleagues.  The post holder will be expected to display high levels of competence, judgement, integrity and accountability.  This post requires the holder to be accountable for their own professional actions and they are not directly supervised.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Support the Named Nurse and Designated Doctor to ensure that the organisation meets its responsibilities in delivering health services for CLA and CL’s.
  • To work collaboratively across health and social care settings with a wide range of professionals and agencies within the public and private sector, to ensure that CLA and CL’s receive the appropriate health services in order to reach their full potential
  • Adhere to CHFT policies and protocols in regard to confidentiality, safeguarding, recording and clinical governance.
  • Be responsible to and accountable within the managerial framework of CHFT
  • At all times and in relation to the roles and responsibilities listed, work as a member of the organisation’s CLA health team
  • Support the Named Nurse and Designated Doctor to collate and analyse health information in order to inform commissioners of health trends and gaps in health service provision.

QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • Professional qualification in health (Part 1 and Part 3 of the NMC register)
  • Current NMC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Educated to degree level in health-related subject, or can demonstrate significant comparable experience or qualifications in safeguarding/ children looked after health service
  • Qualification in Contraception/ Sexual Health/ Children with disabilities
  • Experience in emotional and mental health work

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration experience within a healthcare/ safeguarding/ children looked after environment
  • Significant experience of working with vulnerable children & young people
  • Experience of working with other key stakeholders in promoting and championing health services for vulnerable children and young people
  • Experience of primary care/ acute interface and multi-agency working
  • Able to demonstrate community experience
  • Evidence knowledge of policy and practice relating to safeguarding and children looked after
  • Knowledge of public health issues
  • Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality working across organisational boundaries and integrated care providers
  • Evidence of continued professional development.
  • Willingness to undertake training relevant to the role
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the extensive network of services with acute, primary and third sector care orientated to meet the needs of families
  • Recent relevant experience of working in a Children Looked After Health service.
  • Experience in supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people
  • Evaluation of clinical standards of care through audit and participation in research activity
  • Experience of facilitating safeguarding training and supervision

COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIPS (INCLUDING MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES)

  • Excellence in interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal which is dignified, compassionate and culturally respectful
  • Excellent time management and self- organisation skills to prioritise workload
  • Able to manage own workload, and ability to escalate when competing priorities impact on this
  • High level of written skills to support report writing and good standards of record keeping
  • Experience of working as part of a team and ability to work on own initiative
  • Evidence of clinical leadership skills acting as a positive role model to influence change and aspire to excellence in quality care standards
  • Demonstrates IT and keyboard skills and can formulate and deliver presentations.

  • Highly developed systematic clinical assessment, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Evidence of change management
