Job overview

An exciting opportunity to join the Postgraduate Dental team in the South West as Training Programme Director (TPD) in ST4 Orthodontics (post CCST).  The role of Training Programme Director is to work with and support the Postgraduate Dean and Associate Dean in leading the delivery of a wide range of functions within their specialty, aligned to the NHS England mandate. The Training Programme Director will ensure that both national standards and also guidelines and standards established within the South West are met.  

They will work with the Postgraduate Dean to produce dentists who will strive for the highest standards of patient-centred care and commit themselves to a lifetime of professional development. 

The TPD role will cover both the South West and Thames Valley/Wessex regions.

This role attracts funding in recognition of the time that will be required for the duties of a TPD and is in line with other Dental TPD roles within the South West.  This particular role carries 2 hours (0.5 sessions) per week of educational management contributions. 

Main duties of the job

The Programme Director will ensure that both national standards, determined by the Royal College,  GDC and guidelines and standards established within the South West are met.

Responsibilities will include: 

  • To oversee the South West and Wessex/Thames Valley ST4 Orthodontic (post CCST) Training Programme
  • Specialty-  specific matters and trainee/trainer concerns 
  • Recruitment to training posts and programmes
  • Postgraduate programme management, including assessments, progression, rotations, support and remediation, OOP management, trainee management careers support, less than full-time training, inter-deanery transfer, academic training and other related work-streams.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced NHS Consultant with a thorough understanding of dental training across the region and who will also have strong leadership and communication skills and be able to work effectively as a member of a multi-professional team.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Primary dental qualification
  • Appropriate GDC Specialist List
Desirable criteria
  • Higher educational qualification such as a postgraduate certificate, diploma or Master’s in education.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Considerable experience of working with Specialty Trainees
  • Experience of clinical and educational leadership and innovation, including managing a multi-professional team
  • Attendance at courses aimed to support educational development (example: educator courses, Training the Trainer etc.)
  • Have undertaken relevant HEE training modules to satisfy the requirements of an Educational Supervisor
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Educational Supervisor

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable leadership skills and an ability to influence and motivate others
  • Ability to quickly establish personal and professional credibility with colleagues and other key stakeholders
