Job overview

To provide a comprehensive primary care health service as part of the Multidisciplinary Team to prisoners with health needs within the Offender Health Business Unit.

In conjunction with the management team contribute to and deliver a comprehensive primary care health service in partnership with mental health and key stakeholders as part of a multidisciplinary team within the prison setting.

To operate as part of a multi-disciplinary team, providing the role of the Clinical Nurse Lead in Substance Misuse. To undertake physical and/or health assessments, provide and evaluate a range of health treatments and interventions, to meet prisoner healthcare needs and contribute to the wider continuous development of prison healthcare services. Demonstrate knowledge, skills and understanding of Long Term Conditions providing health promotion and advice on treatment options.

Main duties of the job

Support the Head of Healthcare in operationally leading the provision of high-quality clinical health care services ensuring a consistent and co-ordinated approach to the delivery of quality evidence-based practice.

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day line management of the Substance Misuse Team and will ensure that the delegation of work to the team takes account of the role, skills and competence of staff and is appropriate to their scope of practice. Demonstrate knowledge, skills and understanding of health issues and treatment options to provide clinical guidance to all staff on matters relating to physical health and well being. The post holder carries continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards of care within a secure environment.

The post holder will exercise advanced clinical expertise, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care demonstrated through the advanced competency framework. The post holder will ensure a high level of performance within the team is maintained, by participating in audit, Health and Justice Performance indicators and NHS data collection activity.

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Health care Professional with current appropriate registration e.g., Nurse with NMC membership.
  • Management qualification or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continued professional development at post graduate level, including delivery of evidence-based care
  • Non Medical Prescriber
Desirable criteria
  • Non medical prescribing qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Sustained successful experience in a management operational role, working in a complex environment with multi health professionals
  • Demonstrate experience and knowledge of effective changes to practice to support regulatory compliance e.g., CQC, Regulation 28 etc
  • Experience of leading teams in a complex environment to implement organisational change and deliver a successful outcome
  • Experience of effectively managing a service working in partnership with multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience of working with vulnerable groups and understand the complexity that they present
  • Lead on implementation of quality initiatives
  • Experience of managing and maintaining effective relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Experience of leading clinical governance
  • Understanding and application of confidentiality
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding in relation to the government’s offender health agenda
  • Experience of managing offender care or secure units.
  • Experience of conducting and supporting research
