The post holder will be a qualified Radiographer holding a Diploma (DCR) or Degree (BSc) in Radiography, hold a current HCPC registration and hold the Postgraduate Award in Mammography or the Certificate of Competence in Mammography.

The post holder will be a member of the multi-disciplinary team based at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, undertaking mammography examinations for our symptomatic breast service.

  • To consistently carry out mammography examinations to a standard that meets quality assurance guidelines for mammography (NHSBSP).
  • Analyse quality of own and colleague mammograms daily and make appropriate adjustments or actions.
  • To be a fully participating member of the multidisciplinary breast team including attending MDT meetings.
  • To provide data required in preparation for MDT meetings
  • Plan and prioritise own workload in order to maintain service and clinic workflow.
  • Perform and be proficient in post-surgery follow-up mammography.
  • Carry out localising technique for wire guided stereotactic placement and vacuum biopsies.
  • To perform surveillance mammography for family history patients.
  • To perform mammographic imaging for post wire placements for ultrasound and stereotactic procedures.
  • To perform imaging of core biopsy, theatre specimens and sliced specimens for Pathology.
  • To perform 3D tomosynthesis imaging.
  • To use relevant specialist knowledge, clinical experience and departmental protocols to select appropriate radiographic projections.
  • To be able to critically appraise quality standards to ensure high quality diagnostic service through self-assessment and peer review process.
  • To be able to work in physically challenging environment, performing repetitive and strenuous movements required for mammography

Main Duties

  • To be able to work in physically challenging environment, performing repetitive and strenuous movements required for mammography.
  • To be able to work under pressure and to produce mammograms of optimum diagnostic value, maintaining a quality experience for clients while adhering to time constraints.
  • Take responsibility for documentation of clinical history and using judgement based on knowledge and skills to record and highlight any significant clinical abnormalities.
  • To ensure IPC, equipment cleaning, and sharps disposal processes are adhered to.
  • To perform all duties and adhere to Trust and department polices, protocols and procedures.
  • To participate in the orientation and induction of newly appointed staff. To be able to supervise student mammographers, student radiographers and radiography support workers.

 

  • To report any incident involving patients, staff, and visitors to the line manager or RPS.
  • To attend to the health and safety and security of patients, staff and visitors at all times.

 

Quality Assurance

 

  • To perform regular QA tests on the mammography equipment according to local rules.
  • To follow and comply with all departmental protocols, national QA guidance and operate within safe working practices.

Patient Care /Communication

  • To maintain a high standard of care through appropriate use of interpersonal skills and knowledge.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with clients, relatives, careers and other healthcare professionals, to ensure that individuals are prepared for any examinations they undergo.
  • To accurately and legibly update clinical records in a timely manner.
  • To act in a professional and sensitive manner whilst performing mammography
  • Demonstrate empathy and sensitivity in sometimes highly emotive situations.
  • To reassure and appropriately communicate with patients who are nervous, anxious, cultural barriers and those who have learning and/or physical difficulties.
  • To maintain confidentiality in line with Trust Polices and legislation
  • To effectively communicate using verbal and non-verbal skills where barriers to effective communication are present and adapt radiographic techniques accordingly.
  • To assist and support the patient through all aspects of mammography and procedures associated with mammography, including bleed management and dressing biopsy wounds.
  • To perform all mammography with adherence to IR(ME)R.
  • To know and uphold IR(MER) regulations and local rules pertaining to ionising radiation and justification of requests.

Managing Self

  • Participate in regular supervision.
  • CPD training and further training as may be considered necessary to fulfil the professional role
  • Attend all mandatory training.
  • Participate annually identifying, developing and agreeing your own development plan with your Line Manager using the Trust Appraisal.
  • Comply with all Trust policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Carry out duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunity Policy.
  • Seek advice and support from Line Manager whenever necessary.
  • Maintain professional conduct.
  • Maintain a high standard of appearance and hygiene expected by the Trust.
  • Ensure maintenance of Professional Registration.
