We are currently advertising for a Specialty Doctor in Anaesthesia. This post is for 10 programmed activities. The post holder will be expected to participate in a 1:10 on-call rota. A breakdown of the draft job plan for the post is included in the information pack.
The post offers the opportunity to work in a small, ACSA accredited department in an award winning hospital in an area of outstanding natural beauty within the heart of England in the rolling countryside near Skipton and Ilkley, close to the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
We require applicants to have a range of general experience in Anaesthetics, Obstetrics and Critical Care at specialty doctor or trainee grade. There will be opportunity to modify the draft job plan to accommodate specific commitments or skills. We encourage informal discussion of this before interviews.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will join a team of enthusiastic anaesthetists who can offer expertise and training in Critical Care, leadership and sustainability, quality improvement and regional anaesthesia. We encourage involvement in our existing quality improvement projects and as well as new ideas for improving or developing new work streams. The department has recently been awarded Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation (ACSA) having been commended by ACSA in many aspects including team communication, simulation training and Specialty Doctor career development.
We maintain a 1 in 10 second on call rota which provides the flexibility and sustainability to provide high quality critical care, maternity and emergency anaesthesia services for our patients. The initial job plan is for 10 PA’s with opportunity for extra PA’s (up to 12 in total). Time is allocated within job plans for any additional responsibilities in addition to SPA time. Professional leave is available for agreed additional responsibilities in addition to study leave.

The hospital covers a large geographical area between Yorkshire Dales and Bradford. As a department we have a programme of social events and many outdoor activities to appreciate the natural beauty of the surrounding outdoors.
Our dynamic department encourage involvement in our existing quality improvement projects and as well as new ideas for improving or developing new work streams. The department has recently gained Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation. The department was commended by ACSA in many aspects including team communication, perioperative fasting and anticoagulant management, simulation training and Specialty Doctor career development.
We have Consultants and SAS doctors with specialist interests in sustainability and leadership, mentoring, critical care and regional anaesthesia. We have SAS doctors in many leadership roles in the department and other trust roles.
As a Department and as a Trust we have fully embraced the specialty doctor’s charter. Autonomous working for specialty doctors is in place, and within anaesthesia we have specialty doctors working autonomously.

- MBBS
- Full registration with General Medical Council
Desirable criteria
- Primary FRCA
- ATLS / ALS / APLS / PALS
- EDICM or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience of working in anaesthesia as a specialty doctor or anaesthetic trainee
- Understanding of the NHS Constitution and its implications
Desirable criteria
- Previous NHS experience
- Significant contribution to teaching/research or management
CLINICAL SKILLS
