Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our occupational therapy team in the form of an Occupational Therapy Assistant. If you have a keen interest in working with women in an acute mental health setting and a passion for supporting recovery through occupation, then this is the opportunity for you to make a positive difference.

 

Here at the Becklin Centre we have an established and dynamic service that has been designed to meet the needs of working age females within a mental health setting. We are looking to recruit individuals who have the passion, skills and experience to work with this client group. We are keen to recruit into the following position

·         Occupational Therapy Assistant at Band 3

The role will be based on a 22 bedded ward for people who present with acute and complex mental health difficulties. The ward provides 24hour care to manage risk and promote recovery for clients who have experienced deterioration in their mental state.

The successful candidate will work within the Occupational Therapy team to provide person-centred care and intervention with a view to promoting independence and reduce length of hospital admission. Within this role you will be supported and supervised by a qualified Occupational Therapist. 

The role will involve working within a full multi-disciplinary team on the ward. As well as linking in with external agencies to provide continuity of care.

Main duties of the job

-       Collaborate with the Occupational Therapy team to provide assessment and interventions to meet needs of the patients

-       Communicate outcomes of occupational therapy assessment and interventions to the wider MDT with collaboration with the Occupational Therapy Team.

-       Support the Occupational Therapy Team in reviewing the ward caseload to prioritise workload

-       Take delegation from the Occupational Therapy team supporting outcomes for patients on the ward.

-       Provide support to the activity co-ordinator to create a weekly time table which is inclusive of therapeutic groups

-       Promote meaningful occupation within the patient group

-       Identify and source resources for the ward activities

-       Take a lead for maintaining a therapeutic environment in the activity based rooms (organising, maintaining supplies, creating a welcoming and inviting space, creative use of space).

-       In collaboration with the activity leads on the ward keep a record of number of groups running and attendees.

-       Take on the link role for volunteers attending the ward (Pat dog, inkwell, sports activities).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·                     To assist and support the Occupational Therapy treatment program for Service Users under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist.

·                     To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and contribute to overall provision of a high quality service.

·                     Maintain clear links with your profession’s structures and your professional leads within the Trust and adhering to the professional standards and codes of conduct.

 

2 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

·                     Experience of working with service users in a mental health setting. 

·                     Experience of working in a inpatient setting.

·                     Knowledge of risk management issues.

·                     Demonstrate an understanding of the value of meaningful activity.

·                     Ability to organise self.

·                     Demonstrate an ability to organise resources.

·                     Ability to positively engage Service Users, Carers and Staff.

·                     To have a positive regard to a person-centred approach.

·                     To work positively with challenging behavior.

·                     Demonstrate an ability to communicate verbally and in written format.

·                     Demonstrate an understanding of mental health of an individual.

·                     Knowledge of health and safety issues.

·                     Ability to work in a team or unsupervised.

·                     Group facilitation experience.

 

 

Can demonstrate the following basic computer skills:-

Use of a PC including start/shutdown processes, keyboard and mouse skills

MS Windows file and device management e.g printers

Production of document using word processing (preferably MS Word)

Email use and management (preferably MS Outlook)

Accessing the internet, use and management of web browsers 

3 COMMUNICATION AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS 

·                     To communicate objective treatment outcomes for defined Service Users both verbally through MDT evaluations, team integration and telephone and non-verbally through documentation. 

·                     To actively engage in clinical supervision with a designated Occupational Therapist.

·                     To build a collaborative relationship with Service Users that will promote engagement in the therapeutic process.

4 PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

·                     To assist the Occupational Therapists to implement comprehensive Occupational Therapy treatment programs for Service Users.

·                     In liaison with the Occupational Therapists, to select activities appropriate to Service User needs and carry these out.

·                     To engage with a service user to develop or maintain skills for independent living.

·                     To observe a Service User’s skills/behaviour and be aware of other mental health needs, and to feedback relevant information to the multi-disciplinary team.

·                     To act as a facilitator/co-facilitator of therapeutic group activities.

·                     To participate in the multi-disciplinary approach to Service User care.

·                     To maintain Occupational Therapy based standards of practice particularly in respect of the codes of ethics and professional practice.

·                     To contribute to the education and training of Staff within the service and unit.

·                     To comply with the maintenance of an effective system for managing and minimising levels of critical risk.

·                     To demonstrate a commitment to involving service users and carer’s in seeking their views and comments about their care and treatment.

5 DECISION MAKING AND ADVICE

·                     To communicate appropriate objective treatment outcomes to multi-disciplinary team.

·                     To manage risk within therapeutic interventions.

6 INITIATING AND IMPLEMENTING CHANGE

·                     To be involved in continuing development of the service and contribute to the Occupational Therapy aspect within the process.

7  HEALTH, SAFETY & RISK MANAGEMENT

You  must at all times comply with the Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Health & Safety Policies, in particular by following agreed safe working procedures and reporting incidents using the trust’s risk incident reporting system.

You are required to inform the line manager of any safety issues that could affect you or others in the work place. You are responsible for your own Health & Safety and must co-operate with the management at all times in achieving safer work processes and work places, particularly were it can impact on others.

You will be trained in the correct use of any equipment provided to improve Safety and Health within the trust. You are required to use the equipment when necessary and as instructed; it is your responsibility to ensure the equipment is safe to use, prior to its use and must report any defects immediately to your manager.

You have a duty to take reasonable care of health and safety at work for you, your team and others, and to co-operate with employers to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements.
