Job overview

This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a large Provider Collaborative (OpCOURAGE) providing mental health and wellbeing care and support for veterans in the North of England.  Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Trust are the Lead Provider.  Other delivery partners are Pennine Healthcare NHS Trust, Tees, Esk & Wear Valley NHS Trust, Humber NHS Trust, Combat Stress and Walking with the Wounded.
Op COURAGE offers a range of specialist support and treatment for members of the armed forces community. This includes:
•    helping to recognise and treat early signs of mental health problems, as well as more advanced mental health conditions and psychological trauma,
•    providing support and treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use,
•    liaising with charities and local organisations to support wider health and wellbeing, such as help with housing, relationships, finances and employment,
•    referring to other NHS services, where needed, and
•    recognising that family may also need help and care and supporting them to access this.

Main duties of the job

We need an experienced senior mental health practitioner (Mental Health Nurse, Social Worker or Occupational Therapist) to work in our North West of England Team, based at Arundel House in Bury with access to alternative bases across the North of England . This may be the ideal post for you. 

Op COURAGE offers a range of support and treatment, including:

•    triage, assessment, stabilisation interventions, social and peer support and psychological therapy.
•    supporting with intensive emergency care and treatment for veterans in a crisis
•    helping Veterans to access and engage with other NHS mental health services

You will be required provide triage and assessment to veterans with mental health difficulties, as well as providing stabilisation interventions within case management.

You will have excellent communication, organisational and clinical reasoning skills. You will support assessments, psychological formulation, risk management and interventions for veterans, working with the MDT to support them to deliver effective care for veterans experiencing mental health difficulties.

This is a hybrid post, with some working from base and some working from home.

This post requires extensive travel across the North West with the flexibility to cover other areas in the North of England where necessary. 

Our operating hours are 8am-8pm, 7 days per week and you will be required to undertake shifts across those operational hours.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

LYPFT deliver the Enhanced pathway team across the whole of the North of England, liaising and working with crisis teams, Home Based Treatment Teams, Inpatient units and others to support those veterans who are experiencing acute mental health need.  Our Veteran Liaison Support Officers work in partnership with our clinicians to ensure that a holistic package of care is implemented.  We typically provide a 12-week formulation led pathway.

You will receive training, support and supervision, with a strong emphasis on personal and professional development. This role is community based and it is essential that you have a full UK driving licence and use of a car.

  • Professional qualification BSc/Dip/RMN/OT/Social Work

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience of working with people with complex and enduring mental health needs
  • Experience of working and managing cases of complex mental health
  • Experience of care coordination - Experience of working as a care coordinator within the community

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of military mental health needs - Demonstrates a high level of understanding of the difficulties experienced by veterans presenting with mental health and/or physical health needs and how this impacts on function. Demonstrates an awareness of military culture
