Job overview

The Midlands Analytical Team are looking for a Analyst to bring their skills to lead analysis in the region to improve patient care for the 10.6m population.  We are a team of 25 individuals with a range of skill sets across the spectrum of data infrastructure, data presentation and advanced analytical methods.    As an Analyst, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic analytical community supporting managers and staff across all of NHS England functions.

The post holder will support a team of senior analytical managers within the Midlands Regional Analytical Team which will provide strategic analysis for insight into NHS performance and evidence to support decision-making.

In particular the post holder will:

·        Demonstrate knowledge and established practice of a variety and depth of analytical techniques (including advanced Excel skills) to provide quality, timely analysis and intelligence relating to key priorities of NHS England. These priorities will include assurance and accountability, commissioning, transformation, quality and safety, finance and policy and strategy development.

·        Be adaptable when finding analytical solutions to problems, to analyse and triangulate data in innovative ways and present findings clearly to a range of audiences. Understand the importance of maintaining quality within analysis.

The team are hybrid working, with core bases in Birmingham, Leicester and Derby.  Some work-related travel is expected.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

In particular the post holder will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and established practice of a variety and depth of analytical techniques (including advanced Excel skills) to provide quality, timely analysis and intelligence relating to key priorities of NHS England. These priorities will include assurance and accountability, commissioning, transformation, quality and safety, finance and policy and strategy development.
  •  Be adaptable when finding analytical solutions to problems, to analyse and triangulate data in innovative ways and present findings clearly to a range of audiences. Understand the importance of maintaining quality within analysis.
  • Be able to largely drive their own work programme, providing guidance and review of other’s work and contributing appropriately to the overall strategy.
  • Have excellent communication skills and be able to influence people with different perspectives to get the most out of stakeholder relationships.
  • Support teams to ensure that the portfolio of tasks/projects is planned, managed, and delivered effectively, be calm under pressure and able to juggle competing priorities and tight deadlines. Effectively manage risks  and interdependencies to deliver their own work programme and anticipate and communicate the impact on other’s work areas.
  • Ensure accurate and open communication and co-ordination with a range of organisations and individuals, researching and drafting correspondence and papers and ensuring the management of specific tasks, lead reporting and analysis across a range of specialties, functions and projects.
  • Be a key member of the team as well as supporting effective communication and stakeholder management, both internally and externally
  • Have sound knowledge of NHS data and business processes, and good technical skills in data management, business intelligence and analytics, including data modelling, data visualisation with a focus on building self-service analytics solutions which will allow business users to analyse data themselves.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Degree level in a relevant subject (such as Mathematics, Economics, Statistics, Operational Research, or a related quantitative or analytical discipline) or equivalent level of qualification or significant equivalent previous proven experience in specialist area.
  • Educated to Post-graduate degree level in relevant subject or equivalent level qualification or significant experience of working at a similar level in specialist area.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate an understanding of datasets and data sources including the quality and reliability of the data.
  • Experience of triangulating data from different sources and demonstrate an appreciation of the differences that might occur in large datasets.
  • Able to peer review others work and consistently exhibit best practice of quality assurance in own work.
  • Awareness in project and programme management methodologies such as Prince 2, MSP and / or Agile
  • Evidence of continued professional development.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of familiarity with and application of statistical techniques beyond those of descriptive statistics. For example, standardisation and confidence intervals.
  • Actively researches work area before starting a new project and regularly updates research to inform direction and technical aspects.
  • Experience of cost benefit or cost consequence analysis.
  • Able to build and document complicated and varied types of models including forecasting performance.
  • Experience in using a range of statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, R, and SQL
  • Technical skills in data management, business intelligence and analytics – including data modelling, data visualisation (e.g., Tableau and Qlik) and data blending (e.g., Alteryx and SSIS) along with other supporting tools (e.g., Microsoft BI stack)
