Job overview

The Training Programme Director (TPD) role is responsible for leading and co-ordinating the training of GP specialty trainees across the St Helen & Knowsley training programme. 

This will include managing the programme for the future and ensuring it can adapt to meet the future needs of the NHS. The post holder will work with the Head of School, local Associate Dean (GP) and other local educators to ensure each post within the programme meets the standards defined by the GMC, Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and NHS England.

They will ensure each post enables trainees to access a comprehensive range of experiences which will enable them to meet the requirements of the curriculum during their participation in the programme.

To oversee programme management in the programme area

 

Delivery of GP curriculum

 

To advise and support Postgraduate Dean in educational and

workforce development elements.

 

To provide effective clinical leadership, contributing to the strategic

development of NHSE.

To  support work programmes on behalf of NHSE that support local and national developments and initiatives.

Appraisal, educator development and resource for faculty, trainees and learners locally

To create and promote shared learning opportunities to increase effective interprofessional working across the school.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Primary medical degree
  • On GMC GP Register with a minimum of one year’s post-CCT experience in the specialty
  • Current licence to practice and fully engaged in annual appraisal and revalidation
  • Membership/Fellowship of a College, Faculty, professional association and/or regulatory body
  • Attendance at courses aimed to support educational development (example: educator courses, Train the Trainer, etc.)
Desirable criteria
  • On GP Performers list, be engaged in active clinical practice
  • On GMC register of approved GP trainers or clinical supervisors
  • Educational qualification e.g. Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, Masters in Medical Education or equivalent such as Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with learners or doctors in training in an educational context
  • Experience of clinical and educational leadership and innovation, including managing a multi-professional team
  • Demonstrable track record of delivery in service and education
  • Understanding of developments involving the relevant Colleges/Faculties, professional bodies, related NHS organisations and regulatory bodies
  • Understanding of the workforce transformation agenda
  • Trained and experienced in recruitment, selection and equality and diversity trained in last 3 years
  • Active involvement in, and up to date with, appraisal processes
  • Knowledge of the NHS, its structures and processes, including an understanding of healthcare/multi-professional workforce matters, the Gold Guide and educational theory
