Job overview

The Greener NHS, launched in Jan 2020, is responsible for supporting a world-leading commitment to deliver a net zero health service by 2040. The data and analytics supporting delivery of this ambitious target is critical and the most sophisticated of its kind anywhere in the world.  This is a senior analytics role within the team, designed for an individual with the capability and passion for driving and delivering a rapid transition to low-carbon healthcare. The postholder is critical in delivering by improving our understanding of where we are and how well we are delivering against the national ambition and carbon reduction trajectory. The role would suit someone with a background in carbon quantification, modelling, and a strong understanding and application of a breadth and depth of analytical methods. Experience of climate change or sustainability is essential, and expert knowledge in best practice methodologies for accounting, foot printing and reporting of the carbon impact associated with different activities or products. 

As a senior manager within the Greener NHS team, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic team at the heart of decision-making, leading national programmes, working closely stakeholders and senior leaders to analyse and implement of the ideas set out in the Delivering a Net Zero NHS strategy and NHS Long Term Plan.  

We would consider working patterns such a, part time, compressed hours, flexitime and job sharing for this role.  

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Manager – Carbon Analytics (Modelling) in the Greener NHS programme you may lead on projects related to:

  1. ·Bringing together the patchwork of regular data collections, bespoke data extracts and one-off research outputs to create a single version of the truth;
  2. ·Improving our understanding of where we are and how well we are delivering against the national ambition and carbon reduction trajectory;
  3. ·Supporting updates to the NHS England Board and public reporting of NHS progress against net zero commitments; and
  4. refining and developing the carbon modelling, analysis and evidence underpinning the set of interventions detailed in the Delivering a Net Zero NHS report to support delivery and fill the gaps in our knowledge

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Senior Manager Manager – Carbon Analytics (Modelling) will have line management responsibilities but will also need to draw in and co-ordinate resource from analysts and other colleagues from across the programme, often working at pace. 

Experience of producing high quality analysis at pace is essential. This includes:

·       Understanding and application of a breadth and depth of analytical methods, to provide timely analysis and intelligence to a standard which reflects current best practice;

·       Structuring problems and developing appropriate analytical solutions, analysing and triangulating data in innovative ways, and adapting approaches to deal with ambiguity;

·       Deploying analytical judgement in dealing with complex problems or missing data;

·       Taking a practical approach to providing advice, giving persuasive explanations of complex concepts orally and in writing to a range of audiences, in a clear and accessible manner;

·       Building and managing collaborative relationships across the health system, including internal and external policy and analytical teams, providers and clinical experts, and challenging external partners and stakeholders, to ensure analyses are relevant to their needs.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Either (1) educated to masters level in a relevant subject such as Mathematics, Statistics, Operational Research, Economics or a related quantitative or analytical discipline such as Health Service Research, Social Research; or (2) educated to a degree level in a relevant subject with experience working as an analyst to the equivalent level of a masters.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Subject matter expertise across a number of key areas relating to: • Carbon quantification (e.g for accounting, foot printing, reporting and analysis)

Skills

  • • Highly developed communication skills with the capability to analyse, review and make sense of highly complex, sensitive or contentious information across a diverse range of subjects relevant to post portfolio.
