Job overview

The GIRFT focused support programme was established in 2022 as part of the wider GIRFT National Implementation team to provide on site support to providers and systems in the implementation of best practice surgical pathways.  The programme also provides support in delivery of the longest elective waiters across England through establishment of mutual aid, supporting patients to travel for treatment and plays a pivotal role from GIRFT in ensuring specialist networks are functioning effectively.  The team provide this specialist support primarily to surgical specialties but as services develop will be placed to expand their offer more widely into medical and specialist service provision.  The teamwork in close collaboration with the theatres & periop & elective hub teams as well as providing specialist advice and support to the wider GIRFT implementation pillars.

Main duties of the job

Extensive operational experience in surgical specialities within acute providers.

Provide support to selected providers in implementing sustainable surgical pathways, (Regular travel across England required, including overnight stays)

Work closely with Regional/System/provider colleagues to deliver the objectives of the GIRFT Focussed support programme

Provide subject matter expertise to support development of guidance for providers on implementing surgical pathways and mutual aid

Using available data be able to undertake complex analysis to identify challenges within provider or systems surgical pathways and be able to present this information at board and sub board level with credibility in understanding local processes and pressures

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will:

·         Own the implementation activity across the assigned workstreams, ensuring the activity takes place in a timely manner and meets the highest quality standards.

·         Provide support to selected providers in implementing sustainable surgical services, (Regular travel across England required, including overnight stays) 

·         Work closely with Regional/System/provider colleagues to deliver the objectives of the focussed support programme

·         Provide subject matter expertise to support development of guidance for providers on improving surgical pathway productivity and opportunities for system, regional and national working through mutual aid.

·         Using available data be able to undertake complex analysis to identify challenges within provider or systems surgical pathways and be able to present this information at board and sub board level with credibility in understanding local processes and pressures 

·         Working with other members of the team keep key documents up to date, e.g., risks and issues log, FAQs, communications grid, stakeholder directory.

·         Working with Regional operational and clinical leads to identify areas of best practice and how these can be developed, with the National GIRFT Academy to be adopted more widely

·         Using Model Health System and other data systems available to the national team to provide regular updates to regional and system colleagues on their performance, including highlighting where there are areas of concern that may require more intensive support

·         Work closely with regional implementation, improvement and transformation teams as they develop plans and support systems with recovery and transformation of elective services

·         Provide regular updates to relevant boards and key stakeholders to ensure progress is meeting the wider Elective Recovery plans, this may include developing new programmes work as required.

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Subject matter expertise across a number of key areas relating to elective surgery.
  • Extensive surgical operational experience within an acute provider
  • Demonstrable senior management experience.

  • Demonstrable experience of delivering results through the development and management of teams to ensure success and use a range of levers in the absence of direct line management responsibility
  • Ability to build effective cross functional working relationships across a diverse range of stakeholders to drive organisational agenda
