Job overview

The Department of Histopathology within Airedale NHS Foundation Trust and Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are looking for a qualified, HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to work as Trainee Band 6 during completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio.

Integrated Pathology Solutions LLP is an innovative joint-venture pathology service between Airedale NHS Foundation Trust (AGH), Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BRI) and Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust. This partnership delivers a high -quality pathology service through collaboration between three Trusts for the benefit of patient and service users.

The department is fully ISO 15189:2012 accredited.  The laboratory provides a comprehensive Immunohistochemistry, non-gynae cytology and renal pathology service to users in addition to routine histopathology techniques.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate should be able to evidence that they are working towards the IBMS Specialist Portfolio. This will be requested at the time of Interview. The candidate should also be able to show Licentiate of the IBMS as this is required for the completion of the specialist portfolio.

The candidate should be able to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of all aspects of the laboratory. The candidate should be competent in the majority of areas and where competencies have not been achieved the candidate should be able to demonstrate knowledge.

As part of the role the candidate would be expected to deliver and facilitate training to laboratory staff. They would also be required to liaise with the senior Team to provide effective management of workload and staffing.

The candidate would also be expected to participate in roles such as health and Safety, Quality as well as show an interest in Specimen Dissection.

The candidate should be able to adhere to the procedures in place and where appropriate provide suggestions to amend these in line with current requirements.

The candidate would be expected to rotate through all areas of the laboratory and work cross site (BRI and AGH only) where required.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Biomedical Science degree or equivalent qualification
  • HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio Histopathology or equivalent qualification or experience ( significant Histopathology Laboratory experience)
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of profession body such as IBMS

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant discipline specific experience and knowledge.
  • Experience of working within a Histopathology laboratory
  • Evidence of Continuous Profession Development
  • Experience of Pathology IT systems
  • Experience of Pathology Quality management systems
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within NHS Histopathology laboratory.
  • Experience of writing SOPs
