An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Radiology team working as a Radiology Assistant.

You will be based at Airedale General Hospital, and will provide annual leave and sickness cover at our community hospitals.

This is a full time position working 37.5 per week. This a 3 week rolling rota comprising off 08.30-16.30, 09.00-17.00 and 12.00-20.00 shifts.  There is an additional weekend and bank holiday rota that you will participate in.

To assist the Radiologists, Radiographic and Nursing staff in the smooth running of the DXA, Mammography, Plain Film service, Ultrasound and interventional work over all the Airedale sites if required. This will involve greeting patients, changing them into gowns, assisting with the procedure, giving personal care to patients, for example toileting, processing images, undertaking necessary clerical work and liaising with wards and clinicians.
Mentoring students as and when required.

The role is patient focused, service driven and varied.

Main Duties And Responsibilities


1. Receiving patients into the department at Airedale. If working in ED X-Ray working from the front of house on the reception desk station.

2. Checking, booking and amending patient details onto the department IT system where required.


3. Co-coordinating patient lists to ensure patients are kept to time.


4. Be responsible for liaising with porters regarding ward patients using electronic system, and verbal communication skills


5. Checking patient information including identification of patients, preparation for the examination and questionnaires in BMD section.


6. Recording Weight/Height of patients where appropriate.


7. Confirming examinations on IT system upon completion of the examination.


8. Using hospital administration System and Radiology I.T systems 


9. Using the information systems in line with protocol and following training.


10. Making appointments under guidance from lead Radiographers


11. General clerical duties as and when required.

12. Assisting in changing patients when necessary or requested by a Radiographer.

13. Assisting with safe moving and handling of patients.

14. Assisting in the x ray rooms, following the service protocol and procedures manual.

15. Caring for patients during and after procedures.

16. Chaperoning patients as required.

17. Ensuring patients are aware of next steps after conclusion of the examination.

18. Taking part in multi-disciplinary team meetings to better service to patients.

19. To contribute to Departmental Risk Register as appropriate.

20. Ensuring policies and procedures regarding safety are followed.

21. Communicating with patients, particularly regarding delays in service, examination process and general enquires.

22. Answering patient queries.

23. Checking questionnaires in BMD. Scanning documents onto computer system as required.

24. Liaising with ward staff and porters regarding patient transport to department.

25. Taking messages from medical staff regarding requests for examinations.

26. Communicating with radiographers, radiologists and others to ensure smooth running of service.

27. Communicating with team regarding areas of specialty/handover/ annual leave and rotas.

28. Communication with senior staff regarding stock levels.

29. Organising work in a manner to suit the team in which working. Keeping a flow of patients for practitioners to examine.

30. Demonstrating own activities to new or less experienced staff.

31. Monitoring stock level, taking part in stock takes.

32. Ensure that mandatory training is up to date.

33. To participate in the appraisal system

34. Collecting patients from the department reception area and directing them to the appropriate waiting / changing area.

35. Working alongside the radiographer , radiologist or to provide good quality care in DXA, Mammography and Plain Film X-ray sections of the department.

36. Ensuring infection control measures are followed in all clinical areas.

37. Collecting and tracking patient notes where relating to patients in department.

38. Ensuring, along with the whole team, the patient journey through the department is a positive experience.

39. Assisting in evaluation of services when required.

40. Staying with patients in examination rooms when radiographic staff are not present.

41. Making sure patients are comfortable, warm and dignified in the waiting areas of the department.

42. Sympathetically dealing with emotional needs of patients and carers pre and post procedures.

43. Practically assisting patients whether in examination room, toileting areas, transport or assisting with dressing.

44. To report to duty conforming to the uniform policy and dress code.

45. Adhere to Trust policies in communications, manner, dress and behaviour.

46. Protecting self and others when working in radiation area.

47. Processing Computer Radiography plates when required.

48. Cleaning and care of x ray cassettes and plates as required.

49. Monitoring stocks of disposable equipment in line with needs of the area of work.

50. To ensure effective and efficient use of all resources.

51. To use consumables responsibly, keeping waste to a minimum.

52. To use time effectively and reduce waste.

53. Keeping the areas tidy and cleaning expensive equipment.

54. Cleaning areas or equipment as instructed.

55. Ensuring linen is available, and used linen is removed appropriately.

56. Ensuring all infection control policies are followed in the department including decontamination of surfaces and or equipment.
