Job overview

As lead Pharmacy Technician you will, under the guidance of the Prison Pharmacist and senior management team at HMP Styal, lead the Pharmacy team in the provision of a safe, efficient, and cost-effective pharmaceutical service to prisoners (hereafter known as service users).

Main duties of the job

This role will involve mentoring and developing the skillset of the wider pharmacy team by improving patient safety in line with the national strategy for medicines optimisation and pharmacy services. You will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the in-house dispensary ensuring efficiency and consistency.

Qualification

Essential criteria
  • BTEC/NVQ level 3 or equivalent in pharmaceutical sciences
  • Appropriate accredited technician checking qualification.
  • Higher degree-based qualification or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Management or additional clinical qualifications relevant to prison healthcare

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of medicines optimisation issues
  • Pharmacy legal requirements and controlled drug legislation
  • At least 3 years post-qualification experience of working in community/hospital pharmacy.
  • Experience of working with potentially aggressive people
  • Experience of working within challenging and complex situations
  • Able to provide examples of diversity in practice
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of pharmacy computer systems
  • Has a good understanding of security issues in relation to the prison environment
  • Substance misuse knowledge
  • Experience of working with substance misusers/services
  • Experience of working in a prison environment or similar setting

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good clinical pharmacy knowledge including terminology
  • Computer literate- able to use Word and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to prepare reports, bulletins and run prescribing audits.
