Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon

Consultant

Job overview

The Salisbury GI Service is an ambitious, forward-thinking department, combining upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery, emergency general surgery, gastroenterology and endoscopy. The service provides complete care for patients with disorders relating to the gastrointestinal tract. Surgeons, physicians, specialist nurses and allied health professions work closely together to provide in house multidisciplinary care for all patients with gastrointestinal problems in both the emergency and elective inpatient and outpatient settings.

The successful candidate will join our team to provide an integrated digestive diseases service across the Salisbury area. The department is actively seeking improvements in the provision of services to the local community and to the region. We fully embrace multidisciplinary team working, and sub-specialisation, believing that this best serves the needs of our patients. The department has an excellent track record of leading innovation. We have a vision for our service that includes the continued development of minimal access surgery for all appropriate areas of general surgery including emergency work.

There are 10 consultants across Benign Upper GI (5) and Colorectal (5). We are supported by Clinical Nurse Specialists and administration staff. We are a cohesive department with weekly M+M meetings and good levels of audit and other clinical governance activity.

Interviews for this post will be being held in person on 10th September 2024

Main duties of the job

The appointed Consultant Colorectal Surgeon will be based at Salisbury District Hospital, and be expected to participate in a common approach to the further development of colorectal surgery services. The candidate must be broadly experienced in general surgery with specialist training in the management of colorectal surgical disease. The appointee would be expected to work well in a multidisciplinary environment, and to be able to communicate effectively with all members of the team. The post is a full-time appointment.

The department has a significant degree of sub-specialisation for a relatively small department. Two surgeons (MS and GB) provide surgical services for all rectal cancers below 10 cm and are part of the specialist anal cancer MDT with Southampton providing salvage surgery to the Wessex region, as well as salvage surgery for patients from Dorset. Two surgeons (RP and SS) currently provide specialist surgical services for pelvic floor patients and 2 surgeons (AA and SS) provide specialist surgical services for IBD. It is anticipated that the appointee will provide general colorectal surgical services for colon cancer, diverticular disease and proctology.

Working for our organisation

Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust (SFT) is an innovative hospital with a proud heritage and over 250 years of experience behind us. Here we’re driven to deliver an outstanding experience for everyone and have been well regarded for the quality of care and treatment we continue to provide for our patients and also our staff.

We are an acute Trust, rated “Good” by the CQC, with a track record of high performance providing regional and super regional specialist services such as: Burns, Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery, Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory, Wessex Rehabilitation, Spires Cleft Centre and the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre. We have about 470 beds and employ over 4000 staff.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service.  We think working here is pretty rewarding.  You can access a range of NHS discounts, receive a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme. On-site benefits include car parking (fee applies), leisure centre, day nursery and holiday play scheme.

Salisbury is an attractive place to live and work and really gives you the best of everything.  With easy access to London and local airports, the city of Southampton is only a short train or car journey away or if you prefer the sea, Bournemouth is also accessible.  Don’t just take our word for it, why not explore what Salisbury has to offer by visiting www.experiencesalisbury.co.uk
