This is an exciting opportunity for someone to join our Gastroenterology department . The Salisbury GI Service is an ambitious, forward-thinking department, combining gastroenterology, upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery, emergency general surgery, and endoscopy. The service provides complete care for patients with disorders relating to the gastrointestinal tract.
The position of Senior Clinical Fellow in Gastroenterology is a 12-month fixed term post as a Trust Doctor (IMT3+ equivalent). We are looking for a doctor who can work at registrar level to provide support with senior decision making and support junior doctors on the team to develop their clinical and non-clinical skills. Training in upper and/or lower GI endoscopy, including management of upper GI bleeds, will be supported, depending on the experience and needs of the applicant. The successful candidate will also be encouraged to attend general and sub-specialty gastroenterology clinics, in order to gain further experience in the specialty.
This post is suitable for a trainee with IMT experience who wishes to gain more experience in Gastroenterology and would provide excellent preparation for a candidate considering an application for Gastroenterology specialty training. We are keen to support candidates to develop their portfolio and there will be an opportunity to undertake educational, academic or quality improvement projects whilst in post.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join the team to provide senior support with the care of gastroenterology and general medical patients on the main gastroenterology ward, as well as those on linked outlying wards. They will also provide advice and support to other medical teams caring for patients with gastrointestinal conditions within the hospital, supported by the gastroenterology consultant of the week.
The successful candidate will join our team to provide an integrated digestive diseases service across the Salisbury area.
Gastroenterology patients are treated on a dedicated gastroenterology ward – Redlynch Ward, with general medical patients being cared for by a general medical consultant. We also have access to an infusion unit, Stour day unit. We have a fantastic thriving hepatology service with Hepatology and alcohol CNS support. We have an IBD team involving specialist input from Southampton, specialist gastroenterology radiologists, biologics service, close relationships with IBD surgeons as part of GI unit, CNS support.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop skills and provide teaching for junior doctors in the department. Medical students from Southampton and other teaching hospitals are often attached to the department and all doctors contribute to their teaching and be expected to be involved in audit, risk management, research, and development.
It is anticipated that applicants will take part in the General Medical on-call rota at SpR level.
