Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Senior Nurse Hepatology/Alcohol

NHS AfC: Band 8a

Job overview

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner/Senior Nurse for Hepatology/Alcohol works as a key member of the GI Unit, working with a high degree of independence and autonomy to provide care and treatment to patients within a specific area of expertise or to a defined caseload of patients. The nurse practitioner utilises advanced clinical judgment and decision making to manage complex clinical situations, leading the Hepatology/Alcohol CNS and multidisciplinary team and the delivery of the departmental and trust service targets and meeting the four pillars of advanced practice.

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) role has been developed in response to changing healthcare provision, with the emphasis on developing expert clinical skills including advanced assessment and diagnostic skills.  The ACP role challenges the traditional workforce boundaries; the ANP will frequently undertake tasks and decisions which have traditionally be within the remit of medicine, therefore the ACP is a highly skilled clinical expert nurse working within a defined specialty or clinical area. The post holder will provide clinical leadership, line management, and contribute to the education, development, and supervision of the Hepatology/Alcohol team.

Main duties of the job

As an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, you will:

  • Undertake a clinical caseload to an advanced professional standard using specialist knowledge from theoretical and practical experience.
  • Develop an extended scope of practice beyond their primary profession.
  • Independently Triage Referrals
  • Provide outpatient clinics both on Hospital site and one fixed base community.
  • The post holder will clinically manage a virtual cohort of patients with Haemochromatosis.
  • Offer clinical leadership and managerial support to the Hepatobiliary and Alcohol Care Teams.
  • Provide a day case elective large volume paracentesis service (This may be an option to work with radiology and increase service provision).
  • Undertake clinical audit and be involved in research opportunities.
