Job overview

We are looking for a passionate HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with a IBMS Specialist portfolio to join our small, busy, friendly team.  You will help maintain and develop the excellent work of the Cellular Pathology department of delivering a high quality, efficient service.

The department receives 1500 non-gynae cytology and 22000 histology specimens a year. We undertake all routine cellular pathology processes including BMS specimen dissection, embedding, microtomy, special stains, immunohistochemistry, non-gynae cytology, and OSNA.  

Main duties of the job

The main laboratory is UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 standards.  We are looking for someone who has a IBMS Specialist Portfolio/Diploma in Cellular Pathology to work in the main laboratory with a focus on dissection. For the right candidate we are happy to offer training and development.

The position is full-time, 37.5 hrs. (9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday).  This is a fixed term position for 1 year.  There is accommodation on-site that may be available if required.

Qualification

Essential criteria
  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • State Registration as Biomedical Scientist with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Post-graduate, post-registration training in a specialist area, leading to a completed specialist portfolio.
Desirable criteria
  • Dissection portfolio

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understands theoretical and practical laboratory procedures within the department.
  • Ability to work within all areas of the department.
  • Understands basic quality control / quality assurance procedures and EQA
  • Understands how the QMS fits into the BMS role

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least two years’ experience as an HCPC registered biomedical scientist.
  • Detailed working knowledge of laboratory information and management computer system.
  • Has worked in a UKAS accredited lab
  • Has QPulse experience
Desirable criteria
  • Has NG experience
  • Working knowledge of standard IT packages

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Possess highly developed technical skills and be adept at all laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to operate / troubleshoot complex laboratory equipment and interpret results
  • Competent at training other staff
Desirable criteria
  • Give presentations as part of laboratory training programme.
  • Has performed specimen dissection before
  • Is OSNA trained
