Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Consultant

Job overview

Due to a recent departmental restructure,  current consultants engaging in management opportunities, and progression, we are now able to welcome a consultant with an interest in general obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The candidate would ideally have a strong interest is Obstetrics and be willing to take up a leadership role such as lead for audit and guidelines, foetal monitoring or bereavement.  The candidate must have strong leadership skills and be a driver for change. They must have suitable Gynaecological skills and be able to add to the current Gynaecological service.  Skills in outpatient hysteroscopy and general Gynaecological operating are essential.

Our current consultants have broad interests ranging from oncology to fertility, labour ward leadership to outpatient hysteroscopy.  We are a DGH but have subspecialist level fertility unit, multidisciplinary vulval skin and menopause clinics and visiting gynae-oncology colleagues and are likely to be able to accommodate a particular special interest.

Interviews for this post will be being held in person on 4th September 2024

Main duties of the job

The last few years have seen many proactive and positive changes to our O&G department, including building works which have renovated many of the Gynaecology clinic areas. Our new ambulatory Gynaecology suite includes dedicated outpatient hysteroscopy with recovery area, colposcopy and ultrasound facilities. The department is currently expanding outpatient activity and this is an evolving area.

Some of the key duties within this role include:

- General gynaecology clinics

- Specialist clinics to suit applicant and department

- Obstetric cover daytime and nights

- Antenatal clinic

- Theatre sessions

Working for our organisation

Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust (SFT) is an innovative hospital with a proud heritage and over 250 years of experience behind us. Here we’re driven to deliver an outstanding experience for everyone and have been well regarded for the quality of care and treatment we continue to provide for our patients and also our staff.

We are an acute Trust, rated “Good” by the CQC, with a track record of high performance providing regional and super regional specialist services such as: Burns, Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery, Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory, Wessex Rehabilitation, Spires Cleft Centre and the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre. We have about 470 beds and employ over 4000 staff.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service.  We think working here is pretty rewarding.  You can access a range of NHS discounts, receive a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme. On-site benefits include car parking (fee applies), leisure centre, day nursery and holiday play scheme.

Salisbury is an attractive place to live and work and really gives you the best of everything.  With easy access to London and local airports, the city of Southampton is only a short train or car journey away or if you prefer the sea, Bournemouth is also accessible.  Don’t just take our word for it, why not explore what Salisbury has to offer by visiting www.experiencesalisbury.co.uk

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

In 2015, there were 4225 new gynaecological referrals with over 550 inpatients theatre cases and over 1000 day cases. As a Gynae-oncology unit, Salisbury runs a local MDT with diagnostic and treatment capabilities. The tertiary plastics unit within the Trust provides crucial support for a large tertiary vulval skin clinic which enjoys dermatology and sexual health input. Cross-specialty collaboration with our colleagues in colorectal, urology, radiology (including interventional) and other medical teams is a vital and very welcome part of our MDT. There are fortnightly joint theatre lists with visiting Gynaeoncologists from other trusts.

Gynaecological inpatients are managed on the acute surgical wards. Gynaecological surgery takes place in both the Day surgical unit, and the (separate) main theatre suite.  Low risk antenatal care is midwifery led and the Consultant-led antenatal clinics, running daily, are largely for women with high-risk pregnancies. There is a dedicated endocrinology antenatal clinic weekly. The delivery rate is around 2200 deliveries.

The Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit and Acute Gynae Unit operates on a daily basis (Monday to Friday) allowing direct referral from primary care.
Salisbury is proudly home to an excellent fertility and reproductive centre, which has on site
