Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Consultant

Job overview

We are looking to recruit a new consultant to join our obstetrics and gynaecology department. We would welcome applications from consultants with an interest in high-risk obstetrics, including the care of diabetic women, and general gynaecology.

We are looking for someone ready to take on a leadership role due to recent reconfiguration within the team and management opportunities. You will ideally have a strong interest in Obstetrics and be willing to take up an obstetrics leadership role, for example, labour ward lead or risk lead.  You will  have strong leadership skills and be a driver for change. You must have suitable gynaecological skills and be able to add to the current gynaecological service.  Skills in outpatient hysteroscopy and general gynaecological operating are essential.  We offer a broad range of services and are likely to be able to accommodate a particular special interest.

Our current consultants have broad interests ranging from oncology to fertility, labour ward leadership to outpatient hysteroscopy.  We are a district general hospital but have subspecialist level fertility unit, multidisciplinary vulval skin and menopause clinics and visiting gynae-oncology colleagues.

Salisbury is proudly home to an excellent fertility & reproductive centre, with on site IVF facilities.

Interviews for this position will be held on 6th May 2025.

Main duties of the job

Our Gynaecology department has a full ambulatory gynaecology suite with outpatient hysteroscopy room & recovery area, colposcopy, ultrasound facilities & dedicated MVA suite. The (nurse-led) early pregnancy assessment unit & acute gynae unit operates Monday to Friday, allowing direct referral from primary care. The department continues to expand outpatient activity with nurse-led pessary, vulval skin, recurrent miscarriage & menopause clinics.

As a gynae-oncology unit, we run a local MDT with diagnostic & treatment capabilities. Cross-specialty collaboration with our colleagues across the medical teams is a vital very welcome part of our MDT. There are fortnightly joint theatre lists with visiting gynae-oncologists from the gynae-oncology centre at University Hospital Dorset. Gynaecological surgery takes place in both the day surgical unit, & the main theatre complex. Gynaecological inpatients are managed on acute surgical wards.

The Obstetric department consists of a ten bedded labour ward, dedicated obstetric theatre, day assessment unit, dedicated antenatal clinic & combined antenatal & postnatal ward. An alongside midwife-led unit opened 2 years ago. Low risk antenatal care is midwife-led & daily consultant-led antenatal clinics care for women with high-risk pregnancies.  There is a dedicated weekly endocrinology antenatal clinic. Peripheral antenatal clinics are run in the surrounding towns. The current delivery rate is around 2200 deliveries.
