Job overview

We're looking for a Consultant Plastic Surgeon with specialist interest in Breast Reconstruction and skin cancer. The successful applicant will join our dynamic Plastic Surgery department, serving a catchment population of approximately 3 million people across Wiltshire, Hampshire, Dorset, the Isle of Wight and some patients in the Channel Islands.

The role will require a candidate with a keen interest in all aspects of skin malignancy and its management. They will be expected to be able to deal with all aspects of pigment-related skin cancer alongside having good general plastic surgical capabilities and the ability to perform Microsurgical Breast Reconstructive work.

Main duties of the job

Working collaboratively with the other consultants and wider multi-disciplinary team within Plastic Surgery, the post-holder will;

 

-       Support the further development and improvement of the surgical skin and breast reconstruction services within the Trust, to improve the timely management of patients and increase the resilience of the service.

 

-       Supporting the management of general plastic surgery patients within the department.

 

-       Participate in the consultant on-call rota, taking responsibility for all patients admitted under their care and ensuring timely senior assessment and decision making to facilitate appropriate investigation, prompt management and early discharge.

 

-       Work collaboratively with the breast reconstruction nurses and to continue development of enhanced recovery program.

 

-       Undertake regular ward rounds of in-patients under their care, ensuring handing over of responsibility to colleagues for periods of planned absence and taking over responsibility from colleagues to help cover for absences.

 

-       Undertake weekly clinics and help contribute to the strategic objectives of increasing new patient episodes and reducing unnecessary follow-up where appropriate.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Possession, or within 6 months of possession, of a CCT in Plastic Surgery leading to entry onto GMC Specialist Register.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of wide experience and a high level of competence in: Breast reconstruction surgery including micro-surgical techniques.
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems: demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach.
  • Experience in managing skin cancer including melanoma, sentinel node biopsies and nodal dissection.
  • Knowledge and application of up-to-date evidence based practice.

Management experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to perform effectively as a member of a team, including a multidisciplinary team and to motivate and develop staff.
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance targets.
  • Ability to balance individual requirements against those of the department / Directorate.
  • Commitment to active clinical governance and learning from errors.

Communication skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates clarity in written communication.
  • Always considers patients preferences when discussing treatment options.

Teaching, Audit & Research

Essential criteria
  • Demonstration of an interest and commitment to teaching.
