We are looking to appoint a substantive Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine who will help deliver care along the Stroke Service pathway. We are happy to consider Locum application for 1 year, please add your requirement in your application.

There is a strong commitment to service improvement, particularly in relation to emergency and inpatient medicine with now being a good opportunity for anyone joining the team to get involved with service design and improvement.

Main duties of the job

At Salisbury Hospital we provide hyper-acute stroke care, 24/7 Stroke thrombolysis, regional 7-day TIA service, stroke rehabilitation, stroke early supported discharge, stroke outpatient/follow-up clinics and stroke research. As we continue to expand our hyperacute stroke services, the post holders will support the stroke team in providing a seven day specialist service. The stroke unit is a 30 bedded mixed hyperacute, acute and rehabilitation unit. The stroke service actively participates in the Wessex Research Network and with the support of dedicated research staff enrols patients to several multicentre and local clinical trials. We have close links with the Neurointervention team based in Southampton General Hospital.

The hyperacute service is fully supported by our local GP’s, Commissioners and at the executive/ board level within the Trust.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Possession, or within 6 months of possession, of a CCT in General Medicine or Neurology leading to entry onto GMC Specialist Register
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of wide experience and a high level of competence in stroke medicine
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems: demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach
  • Knowledge and application of up to date evidence based practice

Management Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to perform effectively as a member of a team, including a multidisciplinary team and to motivate and develop staff
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance targets
  • Ability to balance individual requirements against those of the department/Directorate
  • Commitment to active clinical governance and learning from errors

Communication Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates clarity in written and spoken communication.
  • Always considers patients preferences when discussing treatment options

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Demonstration of an interest and commitment to teaching
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees and others. Enthusiastic and ability to inspire others.

Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • Experience in, and commitment to clinical audit
  • Experience of hosting or recruiting patients to NIHR CRN portfolio research and understanding of GCP in Clinical Research
  • Ability to appraise research critically and apply research outcomes to clinical problems
