Locum Consultant in Anaesthetics
NHS Medical & Dental: Locum Consultant
Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a unique organisation, serving as the sole integrated provider in the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire system. Our scope extends beyond boundaries as we oversee adult community services in Swindon and provide acute care from the Great Western Hospital.
Our 5,500 staff have 1.2m patient contacts a year, with 13,000 operations carried out in our Theatres, around 4,000 babies born, and our emergency attendances are now well over 100,000 per year. Those numbers only tell part of our story about what an exciting time it is to join Great Western Hospitals.
We are cultivating a culture that fosters our ambitions, prioritising equality, diversion, inclusion, wellbeing, and leadership. We aim to create an environment where every member of our team can truly thrive.
The Trust is a Disability Confident Employer; all applicants who have a disability can opt to be considered under the guaranteed interview scheme, which means that, providing they meet the minimum essential criteria for the post, they will be offered an interview. We are also proudly accredited as a Veteran Aware organisation and have signed The Armed Forces Covenant.
If we receive a high volume of applications, we may close adverts prior to the published closing date. Therefore, we advise you to complete and submit your application as soon as possible.
Job overview
We are expanding consultant anaesthetist numbers and have pending retirements this year. We are actively recruiting to substantive posts but recognise that some candidates may prefer a locum consultant post in the first instance. We are supporting a new theatre programme designed to maximise use of our theatres and improve theatre productivity. We are transitioning from a very flexible working pattern to a more fixed programme. Working days will be agreed with at least one theatre day being a specialty of the candidate’s choosing.
We would encourage any successful applicant to involve themselves fully in the non-clinical work of the department, according to their strengths and interests.
Locum consultants do not usually contribute to nights and weekend on call, but weekday CEPOD lists will give developmental opportunities for new CCT holders to gain confidence in managing emergency workload within a supportive environment.
Main duties of the job
Whilst we are looking for generalists, we can accommodate a range of special interests including, but not limited to, pre-assessment, peri-operative medicine, and obstetrics. Our new ENT surgeon would like to develop paediatric services to address the long waits for surgery at Bristol Children’s Hospital and an anaesthetist with an interest in DGH paediatric anaesthesia would be a welcome addition to the team. The increasing complexity of obstetric work means that we would also be paricularly interested in advanced obstetric competencies.
We have good pre-assessment facilities and need to expand and develop the service to support higher theatre throughput.
As part of our Acute Hospital Alliance and Integrated Care Board, the Sulis Hospital south of Bath is being developed into an elective surgical hub. We will need increased pre-assessment capacity and there would be the opportunity for regular sessions within job planned activity in high volume orthopaedics in the first instance.
We have over 4000 deliveries a year and obstetric anaesthesia is a big part of our elective and emergency workload. We have recently exceeded 50% of deliveries by caesarean section and our epidural rate is around 20%. All new consultants would be expected to deliver daytime obstetric sessions in order to maintain their obstetric skills for on call cover.
Working for our organisation
We are a busy DGH covering general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, urology, gynaecology, ENT, oral surgery, breast surgery, ophthalmic surgery and obstetrics. There are 15 theatres in the main complex, a separate theatre in the oral surgery department and two theatres in maternity.
We currently anaesthetise children over the age of 2 years for elective procedures, mainly in ENT, oral surgery and urology. Emergency care is provided for younger children.
We are committed to continuous improvement and now have gained RCoA Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation.
As a Trust, we place high importance on staff wellbeing. You will be offered a wide variety of support to help you maintain your wellbeing and to help colleagues maintain theirs. The Trust’s Health and Wellbeing team has won a National Award during 2020 for the work they have done locally.
We are located in the main hospital building on Level 1. There are excellent travel links (including good onsite parking), with many cities within easy range. The Trust is located on the edge of Swindon with access to a variety of outstanding areas to live which includes both market towns or villages with short commutes to the site.
