New and exciting opportunities for all members of the pharmacy team are increasingly available at the current time. This challenging and varied role is ideal for an experienced Pharmacy Technician who wishes to continue their clinical contribution to patient care whilst taking a leading role in developing the pharmacy workforce in line with our departmental, regional and national pharmacy workforce vision.

Working alongside a counterpart Lead Pharmacy Technician, the post-holder will work in ward and dispensary environments, whilst also collaborating with  partner trusts within the BSW ICS, the ICB itself, and key stakeholders in other sectors, to ensure all members of our pharmacy team have the skills necessary to take advantage of the opportunities available to them in the advancement of our profession. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will organise, facilitate, and deliver training to various members of pharmacy staff, including, but not limited to Pharmacy Technicians, Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians, Trainee Pharmacists, Pharmacists, Pharmacy Assistants, Pharmacy undergraduates, work-experience students, Pharmacy Support Staff, and others. 

Key responsibilities of the post include:

  • The direct supervision and management of the education and training of of a variety of pharmacy staff, including Pre-registration Pharmacy Technicians. 
  • Co-ordination of the initial training and subsequent maintenance of ACT and MMT qualifications for Pharmacy Technicians
  • Provision of leadership and organisation for the Pharmacy Technician Assessor Team, including the training of new assessors
  • Lead in the support of mandatory training for the department
  • Participation in the provision of high quality Medicines Optimisation services as part of the clinical and technical pharmacy teams.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will organise, facilitate, and deliver training to various members of pharmacy staff, including, but not limited to Pharmacy Technicians, Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians, Trainee Pharmacists, Pharmacists, Pharmacy Assistants, Pharmacy undergraduates, work-experience students, Pharmacy Support Staff, and others. 

The post holder will share the responsibility for acting as supervisor and line manager for Pre-registration Pharmacy Technicians and/or Pharmacy Assistants.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ / QCF Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent plus accredited underpinning knowledge (BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent)
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Accredited Checking Technician qualification or be eligible and willing to work towards accreditation
  • Accredited medicines management qualification or be eligible and willing to work towards accreditation.
  • NVQ assessor to A1 standard or equivalent or working towards this qualification
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ Level 4 in Management or equivalent knowledge and experience in Pharmacy management role
  • Member of Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK
  • Supervisory qualification
  • Training or teaching qualification
  • NVQ verifier or able to work towards

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive post qualification working as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Experience of organising and managing in busy and potentially stressful environments
  • Experience of leading teams and staff management
  • Project / Audit work
  • Managing change
Desirable criteria
  • Management experience e.g. project management, HR processes including recruitment and selection
  • Managing meetings
  • Education and training experience desirable
  • Procedure development

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety at Work, COSHH, National and Local guidelines
  • Understanding the principles of stock control systems / supply and security processes
  • Understanding of clinical governance and its implications for service including quality and audit
  • Knowledge of legislative aspects of medicines supply
  • Good and broad understanding of current hospital pharmacy practice in order to advise other staff
  • Good knowledge of education and continuous professional development strategies
  • Knowledge and clear understanding of Good Distribution Practice (EU GDP 2013/C 343/01), and other relevant regulations, guidance and quality standards
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Codes of Practice / Customer Care / NHS plan for Pharmacy
  • Knowledge of wider NHS agenda and issues
  • General Pharmaceutical Council professional guidelines
