Rehabilitation can be a challenging time as a patient, but as a therapy team, we get the exciting opportunity of helping someone regain their independence. Are you interested in rehabilitation and wanting to work within NHS services? If so we would love for you to take this opportunity to work with us to provide high quality inpatient rehabilitation and discharge planning in the Swindon Intermediate Care Centre (SWICC).

The post will be static on Forest ward here in SWICC. Consequently, on Forest Ward you will be required to see patients who have had a stroke, broken their hip, or have other reasons for requiring a short period of inpatient rehabilitation.  We are a progressive team that is always looking to improve the way that we work with our patients and each other. 

Main duties of the job

The role of a Band 2 Rehabilitation Assistant within our team includes working with patients to provide rehabilitation and discharge planning alongside a team of other Rehabilitation Assistants and qualified physio- and occupational therapists. This is alongside administrative tasks and working with the rest of the therapy team to cover the priorities of the ward as needed. We treat patients on an individual needs basis by identifying what they need to work on prior to discharge from hospital and supporting with referrals to community services for ongoing support. Our core hours are Monday to Frida 0800-1600. We currently don't offer a weekend service but you may be required to work weekends in the future as the service develops.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. To carry out Rehabilitation following an Interdisciplinary model in accordance with the unit philosophy.
  1. The post holder will work supervised by Therapists,( Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and SpeechTherapists) to maintain an efficient day-to-day service.
  1. To share with the Therapists the overall therapeutic aim: to enable or restore patients to the highest level of physical, mental and social independence as possible and support carers in their role.  They will assist in clinical duties, to include the implementation of treatment programmes for patients.

  2. To assist in the administration and clerical duties of the department such as ordering equipment and supplies enabling smooth running of the department. 
  1. To assist in maintaining the department and equipment following the infection control policy to support the clinical work of the team. This will include changing laundry and cleaning of rehabilitation equipment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Literate and Numerate(5 GCSE grade c or above or equivalent)
  • Computer literate (a working knowledge of word, outlook and internet usage)
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ or equivalent in related area

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of a previous role involving various modes of communication with a variety of people
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working at Band 2 in at least 1 of the following: Physiotherapy Assistant, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Rehabilitation Assistant, Speech and Language Therapy Assistant
  • Previous Experience of working in the NHS
  • Previous experience in care delivery

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to empathise, support and motivate patients and carers
  • Ability to communicate with people with barriers to communication
  • Training in Rehabilitation competencies or equivalent base of theoretical knowledge
  • A knowledge of what the job entails
  • Ability to organise self and workload in order to complete given tasks within a given timescale
  • Motivated and willing to learn new skills
Desirable criteria
  • Training in Rehabilitation competencies or equivalent base of theoretical knowledge
  • Knowledge of Stroke
