Job overview

Our friendly and progressive Pharmacy department is currently looking for a dynamic and forward-thinking individual to join our Pharmacy Dispensary  team. This role will involve maintaining the dispensary service on a day-to-day basis and providing supervisory support to the team. The post is essential to delivering a high quality dispensary service and maintaining high work standards and an efficient and safe service.

Main duties of the job

Co-ordinating, supervising and monitoring day to day operation of the Pharmacy Dispensary under the guidance of the Dispensary Leadership team in the provision of a safe and effective Pharmacy service in line with current policies, procedures and legal requirements.

Be responsible for some aspects of HR and Recruitment (including but not limited to Staff Appraisal, Sickness Absence Management, Capabilities and Disciplinary procedures and processes as required in order to support and deliver trust policies).

To undertake dispensing of prescriptions in an accurate and timely manner and to use professional knowledge to ensure that such duties are performed in accordance with Good Dispensing Practice. To provide support, mentorship and training to Pharmacy Assistants and new starters in all processes and procedures associated with the dispensary service.

When necessary, to undertake medicines optimisation duties on the wards, improving the quality of care to patients in a clinical area by means of an efficient medicines optimisation system. This will include assessing patients own medicines ensuring they are suitable for use in hospital and maintaining and ordering non-stock medicines for patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

All Pharmacy staff involved in all aspects of Good Distribution Practice (EU GDP 2013/C 343/01) have a personal responsibility to ensure that all activities undertaken within our hospital Pharmacy are compliant with Good Distribution Practice (EU GDP 2013/C 343/01) and all relevant department procedures are followed effectively.

This role is ideal for someone ready to gain further experience in a dynamic environment with constant opportunities to learn and progress.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Promoting high work standards at all times.
  • Acting as a supervisor for the Dispensary service.
  • Monitoring service quality through agreed performance metrics.
  • Ensuring facilities and services comply with Good Distribution Practice (EU GDP 2013/C 343/01) and other relevant medicine regulations and quality standards.
  • Assisting in staff training and supervision.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths and English, at Grade C or above
  • NVQ / QCF Level 2 in Pharmacy Services or willing to work towards
  • Dispensing accuracy accreditation. South West scheme or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Completed or willing to work towards Management and Leadership competencies

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience as a hospital pharmacy assistant, or supervisory experience in a community Pharmacy
  • Recent practical experience in a busy dispensing environment
  • Managing own workload to meet the needs of a service
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of training individuals
  • Experience of supervising, directing, organising and monitoring performance in a high pressured environment
  • Experience of leading teams and staff management

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal skills in order to communicate effectively with pharmacy staff, hospital staff and patients/carers with the ability to listen and give instruction
  • Aware of Health and Safety issues and their implications for staff
  • Good organisational and time management skills. Able to prioritise tasks and respond to urgent demands by diverting resources whilst managing own workload
  • Able to make sound judgments where there are a range of options, in a non-judgemental and objective way
Desirable criteria
  • Experience and understanding of good supervision and leadership
  • Be able to provide and receive routine information where there may be barriers to understanding
