Advanced Pharmacist (Dermatology)

Band 8a

Job overview

Are you a highly, experienced clinical pharmacist looking for a new and unique way to develop your clinical specialism, and play a pivotal role in delivering transformational change across a provider collaborative?

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated pharmacist to join our Pharmacy Team at Great Western Hospital on a 12month, fixed-term basis as an 8a Advanced Pharmacist (Dermatology).

You will initially use your independent prescribing and consultation skills to deliver key, specialty- specific, biosimilar switch savings, both within the Trust and across our acute provider collaborative, but will then further establish the role of  the specialist pharmacist within the Dermatology team at Great Western Hospital,  supporting the specialty to reduce their risks around prescription, monitoring and review of medicines, as well as non-medically prescribing in out-patient  & day hospital settings and championing medicines optimisation & medicines effectiveness for in-patients, day cases and outpatients.

By demonstrating the value of this post to both our Trust and the wider BSW Acute Healthcare Alliance at the end of its fixed-term, you will play a key role in influencing our future service developments and, potentially, the establishment of a similar permanent post.

Main duties of the job

  •  Act as an advanced Pharmacy practitioner for the dermatology, to plan the care and identify areas of concern related to medicine use within this specialty.
  • To be an Independent Prescriber (IP) and to continue to develop the role of pharmacist independent prescriber within the Trust.
  • To provide a specialist clinical pharmacy service to patients in dermatology  out-patient areas in line with clinical pharmacy standards and objectives.
  • Clinically checking all prescriptions before dispensing and referring to the prescriber any unusual doses, potential drug interactions or incompatibilities for confirmation or revision before authorising dispensing.
  • Assist in clinical decision making to ensure patient safety and medication effectiveness through the medicines optimisation agenda.

Working for our organisation

“Our STAR values – Service, Teamwork, Ambition and Respect – are a golden thread running through everything we do. These values serve as a guiding principle, driving us towards our vision of delivering great joined up services to our local community. Whether at home, in the community, or within the hospital, our goal is to empower individuals to lead independent and healthier lives.”

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Work in collaboration with system wide colleagues to ensure best medicines value, safety & optimisation for our Dermatology patients.
  • To lead and develop the clinical pharmacy service to Dermatology specialty within the Trust, including setting and monitoring quality standards for clinical pharmacy services.
  • To introduce, maintain and develop a team and specialty-based model for clinical pharmacy service provision.
  • To act as the point of liaison for the specialty and lead on pharmacy-related aspects of the development of services, medicines introduction, horizon scanning and specialist information provision.
  • To regularly meet with the Pharmacy Clinical Services Manager and Commissioning and Medicines Value lead, and develop a strategic plan to ensure post achieves medicines value, medicines safety & clinical targets.
