Job overview

Come and join our paediatric dietetic team for Wrexham and Flintshire, based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The paediatric team comprises 1wte Band 7 team lead, 2.4wte Band 6 paediatric dietitians and 1wte Band 3 Dietetic Assistant. The department sees the whole range of paediatric conditions, including cows’ milk allergy, oral and enteral nutrition support, diabetes and feeding issues.  The care of cystic fibrosis patients is shared with Alderhey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.  Wrexham Maelor Hospital has one children’s ward and a Level 2 Special Care Baby Unit. Most of the work is with outpatients. The department enjoys good working relationships with the paediatric dietetic services in Central and West North Wales, and the teams meet up twice a year, but collaborate frequently throughout the year, sharing resources and learning.

The wider dietetic department in Wrexham and Flintshire consists of over 40 Dietitians and Dietetic Assistants, supported by an administration team. There are close links with the services in Central and West, and continuing professional development, both internally and externally is supported and encouraged. Many of our Dietitians are involved in research with published work. We have an active development programme, considering support for Msc level study. We would welcome an informal chat with any interested candidate.

Main duties of the job

The role will mainly be outpatients, although we do have one children’s ward and a special care baby unit which require cover.  However, most seriously ill children are cared for at Alderhey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.  The role will include outpatient clinics, which, since the pandemic, will be a mixture of virtual and face to face. Some clinics will be at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, but others may be in the community. We use a group education approach for some conditions, such as cows’ milk allergy, and these are currently all on Teams, but some are likely to return to face to face when this is possible. Your caseload will be a mix of conditions for all ages between infancy and the teenage years, and you are likely to have multidisciplinary, specialist clinics as part of your job plan. We are committed to developing our fellow professionals, and so you can expect to carry out regular training sessions, for example for Health Visitors, School Nurses and medical staff.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
