Do you want to be part of a supportive team who deliver cutting edge research to children? If so, this could be the job for you. 

The Great North Children’s Hospital Research Team is based across 2 areas of the Royal Victoria Infirmary with an office on Ward 1b and a paediatric area within the Clinical Research Facility on level 6 Leazes wing. The team delivers numerous clinical trials to children of all ages with a wide variety of conditions across both the RVI and Freeman sites. Studies currently running, range from data collection studies to Gene therapy studies, delivered by an experienced team of research staff who are available to deliver research across all paediatric specialties except for Oncology within the Trust. The team consists of a mix of Band 6 Research Nurses and 3 CTA’s alongside a supportive non-clinical team of a project manager, Clinical Trial Coordinators and Data Managers.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join the team, full training and support will be given to the successful candidate, both regulatory i.e GCP and clinical i.e Venipuncture.

The successful candidate will be motivated, enthusiastic and willing to learn new skills.

Attention to detail is essential in this role in order to collect accurate usable data, time management skills are also important in order to deliver study timelines to target. Flexibility is an important skill in this role as workload changes may be needed on short notice if required by study protocol needs. There will be a requirement to work both independently as well as with other team members as the need arises, so the successful candidate will need to have a dynamic approach to there working schedule and daily task changes.

Full training will be given to the successful candidate with protected time to be able to attend any required sessions. A full induction pack will be offered when starting in the post and a preceptor will be identified to support the successful individual while they familiarize themselves with the research process.

  • Coordinate and improve trial communication throughout Multi-Disciplinary Teams throughout the Trust
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, carers and professional to ensure service delivery
  • Communicates effectively with research team and study participants and their family members. Is able to provide patients with information, which may be complex or sensitive, regarding their participation in the clinical trial and the care that they
    will receive as a consequence of that
  • Facilitate the recruitment of research participants in to low risk research studies, which is likely to include quality of life and tissue sample collection studies
  • Support the research delivery team to successfully deliver a broad ranging portfolio of clinical trials
  • Coordinate and supervise housekeeping duties and ordering of all clinical trial supplies
  • Co-ordinate the collection transfer and storage of blood / tissue samples in accordance with the Human Tissue Act 2004 as required by trial protocol

  • NVQ level 4 or equivalent qualification or NVQ level 3 and an ability to demonstrate significant experience relevant to role

Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience of caring for patients in a professional setting
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Understanding of the Trust’s confidentiality procedures (Data Protection Act, Caldicott guidelines)

  • Evidence of any education related training programs pertaining to clinical trials
  • Experience of using NHS patient management systems
  • Knowledge regarding the mandatory standard regarding conduction/construction of clinical trials (to include ICH GCP, UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research etc.)
