Job overview

We are seeking a Consultant Haematologist (FTC 1 year)  within the department who would be dedicated and passionate in helping us to provide outstanding and exemplary care for patients with blood disorders in the South West.

We run a dynamic service, with opportunity for you to develop your interests in areas such as lymphoma, maternal medicine and laboratory work. We also fully support the development of skills in education, management and leadership.

The post-holder will work with seven other Consultant Haematologists and two Specialty Doctors, plus junior and nursing team to provide a range of services for patients with complex medical needs, and so you will have a supportive and friendly team around you, providing plenty of scope for you to showcase your skills and to learn more.

Main duties of the job

Outpatient Clinics are held in the Brunel Building, adjacent to the Chemotherapy Suite. These are provided by a mixture of medical and non-medical clinical staff using face to face and telephone consultation as appropriate. This is a mixture of general haematology and subspecialist clinics across the week to optimise care by medical and non-medical clinical staff.

Inpatient beds are located in the Brunel Building, where the majority of beds are in single rooms.  An allocated inpatient number of 4 can be double and is supported by a CMT who also provides support to the Chemotherapy Unit

There is a maternal medicine service at NBT.  The regional services for renal medicine, trauma, neurosurgery and neurosciences and vascular surgery are based at NBT. There is a quarterly outreach PNH service clinic.

There is support from a clinical trials team for both malignant and non-malignant studies.  Both investigator-led and commercial studies have been conducted. Engagement in clinical trials across the clinical team is encouraged.

Working for our organisation

North Bristol NHS Trust is a progressive and ambitious teaching and research organisation, and a specialist regional centre for major trauma, neurosciences, plastics and burns, orthopaedics and renal services. With a turnover of £550m and 8,000 staff, our clinical teams have built a strong reputation for exceptional healthcare, personally delivered.

The Department of Haematology is based at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust, in the Pathology Sciences and Brunel Buildings. The Department provides services for the local population of 500,000 and supports region or supraregional services for some subspecialties in NBT, including diagnostic services in the Bristol Haemato-Oncology Diagnostic Service SIHMDS.

There is a Chemotherapy Suite, adjacent to Medical Day Care in the Brunel Building. This provides systemic anti-cancer therapy and blood product support during the standard working week. Other supporting services include an acute oncology team, a PICC line insertion service, palliative care services and the NGS-Macmillan support centre located adjacent to the Brunel Building.

This is a great opportunity for you to live and work in Bristol; a city in the hills of South West England, with its own thriving art, music and cultural scene hosting a number of exciting annual festivals such as the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta and the Bristol Harbour Festival.
