Job overview
An exciting opportunity to develop a Paediatric food challenge service at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. we are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced clinical nurse specialist to join an established Consultant led Allergy team to develop a nurse led service and reintroduce food challenges.
The paediatric allergy service manages children with a range of conditions. The service manages children with a range of conditions to include food allergy, anaphylaxis, Urticaria/angioedema, drug allergy, and de-labelling for relevant cases. The paediatric allergy service is based within the Dermatology department in Amersham. the food challenge will be conducted on ward 7 ( Paediatric ward) in Wycombe Hospital.
We will also consider applications from experienced RSCN/ child branch qualified nurses with a keen interest in allergy and offering a 12 -18 Months development programme
The role is currently 2 days a week service Tuesday and Thursday excluding Bank Holidays with the scope to increase as the service develops.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Lead and participate in procedures for patients undergoing desensitisation and specialist allergy investigation including oral food challenges.
- Work in partnership with allergy medical staff to ensure that patient's clinical needs are met in scheduled allergy clinics.
- Undertake allergy assessment by performing skin prick testing and allergy case histories according to agreed protocols/ patient group directives.
- Lead in the education and provide advice for junior staff, patients and carers in relation to the management of anaphylaxis and allergen avoidance
- define, design and write protocols, clinical guidelines and policies associated with clinical development within allergy. Implementing changes to established protocols and practices as appropriate based on research driven by best practice or new ideas within allergy in consultation with the lead Consultant.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING eg Education, professional qualifications
Essential criteria
- NMC Registered Nurse with RSCN qualification
- Relevant post registration course in Allergy
- Advanced History Taking course/ willingness and ability to undertake training within set timetable
- Mentorship course/ willingness and ability to undertake training to undertake training within set timetable
- Non-medical prescriber/ willingness and ability to undertake training to undertake training within set timetable
- Leadership & Management course/ willingness and ability to undertake training to undertake training within set timetable
Desirable criteria
- Counselling qualification
EXPERIENCE eg Breadth of occupational experience
Essential criteria
- Post registration experience in paediatrics
- Experience of autonomous practice and decision making
- Experience of MDT working
- Experience of working with complex patients
- Minimum 2 years Band 6 experience – ideally in speciality or related area
- Experience of using an electronic patient record system
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of leadership, people management, teaching and supervision of other HCP
- Experience of clinical teaching
