An exciting opportunity has arisen for highly motivated team players to join our well established Orthopaedics Department at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, welcoming applications for Trust Doctor ST3+ level to join the team.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in an on-call rota and must hold full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice.
This post is not recognised for training purposes; however the Trust will ensure teaching to a high standard to assist the successful applicant in progressing further.
Main duties of the job
- Assessment, diagnosis and management of all patients admitted to Trauma & Orthopaedics
- Management of all patients on the trauma and elective wards, and any outlying wards.
- To participate in outpatient, elective and fracture clinics.
- To participate in trauma and elective surgery.
- Referral of patients to other specialities.
- Necessary investigation e.g. blood samples for crossmatch, emergency X-ray etc.
Appropriate disposal of patients, either:
- Admission to inpatient facilities
- Discharge with suitable follow-up at the hospital
- Discharge to General practitioner
- Discharge with no follow-up
Working for our organisation
The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:
• The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds.
• Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
• Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.
The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.
The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCS or equivalent
- ATLS
- Full registration with the GMC
Desirable criteria
- Further qualification eg. FRCSOrtho
Knowledge and experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum basic surgical training – 24 months (non-UK doctors must be able to demonstrate 24 months of equivalent training with supervision and assessment).
- At least 12 months experience in T&O surgery at SHO level or equivalent
- At least 6 months experience in a multi-professional working environment
- Able to demonstrate knowledge of basic pre- and post-operative patient management for elective surgical patients
- Must have 12 months experience in the UK in a substantive SHO post
- Validated logbook with appropriate operative experience.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of at least one substantive post of 3 months in Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Intensive Care or Cardiothoracic Surgery.
- 12 months experience in T&O surgery at SpR level or equivalent
- Ability to assume Team Leader role in Emergency Department.
Skills and abilities
Essential criteria
- Proven ability to lead a team, work as part of a team and demonstrate initiative.
- Ability to organise and prioritise busy workloads effectively.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, senior medical staff and other health professionals.
- Evidence of continuing professional updating.
Desirable criteria
- Counselling or a related qualification/training
