Joint Consultant role in Haematology at Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh Teaching Hospital and Senior Lecturer at Edge Hill University

Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, in partnership with Edge Hill University (EHU), are looking to appoint a committed and enthusiastic Consultant in Haematology. Candidates will have experience of undergraduate medical teaching and training to the post of clinical academic.

This will be a joint appointment between Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine at Edge Hill University. You will be appointed jointly under an employment contract with the Trust and an Honorary contract with the University (the Follet principles will apply).

It is anticipated that the equivalent of up to 2 programmed activities (PAs) will be allocated to the role of Senior Lecturer in the integrated job plan and that these academic responsibilities will normally be delivered on-site at EHU. This is a newly created role and will provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to make a contribution to the development and implementation of the MBChB programme at Edge Hill University at an important time in its development.

Main duties of the job

This is a consultant post in the Department of Clinical Haematology.

The post is intended as full time (10 PAs – 8 DCC, 1.5 core SPA, 0.5 Trust SPA). The role involves leading three general Haematology clinics a week, reviewing Haematology inpatient admissions, lab work and participation in our weekly sector multi-disciplinary team meetings. There is also the option of some remote working due to the excellent IT setup within the Trust.

There is a 1 in 3 local weekly on-call rota covering WWL referrals. Out of hours support to provide clinical and laboratory advice to colleagues outside normal working hours. Currently the commitments are 1 in 8 Monday to Friday covering SRFT & Wigan hospitals, and 1 in 10 Saturday and Sunday covering SRFT, Wigan and Bolton hospitals.

AAC panel interview date is to be confirmed.

Working for our organisation

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are the proud providers of acute hospital and community services to the people of the Wigan Borough and surrounding areas. At WWL, we value our staff believing that ‘happy staff, makes for happy patients’. We have a recognised track record in staff engagement, and living our values ‘the WWL Way’.

WWL are committed to placing the patient at the heart of everything we do, and in the provision of safe, effective care that acknowledges and ensures dignity. With this in mind we are seeking to recruit people who share our values and beliefs.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The team consists of 2 other consultants, 2 staff grades, 2 Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialists and an FY1. Outpatient chemotherapy is administered on our Cancer Care Centre and there is a separate Planned Investigation Unit for outpatient treatments, such as blood transfusions and iron infusions.

The lab at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary processes inpatient blood tests and within the lab there is a microscopy room for blood film reporting. Lymph node and bone marrow biopsies are sent to a tertiary diagnostic centre, which provides unified diagnostic reports.

We are part of the Greater Manchester Cancer Network and have support from The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester University Foundation Trust for patients requiring tertiary care.

The Trust has recently achieved Teaching Hospital status with Edge Hill University Medical School. This will provide excellent opportunities for teaching and supporting educational development of students and junior doctors.

The post holder will undertake laboratory work including advice regarding diagnostic samples, validation and interpretation of results and involvement in agreeing policies and procedures for the examination of samples.

The post holder will participate in the diagnosis and management of individual patients by liaison with patients, clinicians and other hospital and community staff.  The majority of the work is through outpatient clinics and day case work.

The WWL Trust Anticoagulant Service is overseen by the Consultant Haematologists (one of whom is lead for anticoagulation) and is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of nurse practitioners, pharmacists and biomedical scientists. Three hospital clinics and 5 community clinics are undertaken weekly, managing up to 4000 patients. The patients remain the responsibility of the referring clinicians, though the anticoagulant staff are accountable to the lead Consultant Haematologist.
