Job overview

We are looking to recruit a qualified accountant or professional with equivalent knowledge, experience and expertise to work within the Financial Services department in the role of Deputy Financial Services Manager – Financial Accounts and Systems.

Reporting to the Financial Services Manager (Financial Services) you will be responsible for the management of the Financial Accounts and Systems teams. You will also play a key role in leading service improvement across the wider Financial Services department.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Financial Services Manager –  will play a key role within the Financial Services team, taking the lead responsibility for their area, helping to manage and advise on all financial matters, in particular:

  • To take a lead role in VAT accounting issues and calculation of provisions
  • To take a lead role in cash flow forecasting and cash management, and liaison with Trust Bankers
  • To make a contribution towards the Monthly Accounts, Quarterly Monitoring returns and Annual Financial Returns
  • To be responsible for the support, development and monitoring of apprentices and technical aspects staff development within the Financial Services Department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The ideal candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of Accounting standards, VAT, Taxation and a good working knowledge of financial computer systems, leading projects, developing teams, as well as a significant amount of experience of working in the finance department of a complex organisation. They will also have staff management experience.

  • To make a significant contribution to the annual accounting process.
  • To take a lead role in relevant technical accounting issues To make a contribution towards the Monthly Accounts, Quarterly Monitoring returns and Annual Financial Returns.
  • To make a contribution towards the production of the trusts annual planning cycle.
  • To give financial advice and support to a range of staff on a number of issues, facilitating in effective management and financial control within the department.
  • To maintain control over the financial aspects of relevant information systems.
  • To give quality accounting support, taking account of statutory regulations, corporate governance and proper accounting records.
  • To project lead on specific areas of quality and process improvement in Financial Services.
  • To be responsible for the development of staff within the Financial Services Department.
  • To provide regular management information in relation to area of responsibility.
  • To ensure that financial controls are maintained within Corporate Governance guidelines.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Good level of education in a numerate subject.
  • Professional accountancy qualification or equivalent knowledge, experience and expertise. Evidence of participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL or equivalent experience.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • In depth specialist and practical knowledge of relevant accounting standards, VAT taxation cash treasury management and year end/month end accounting processes.
  • Substantial experience in the finance department of a complex organisation. Demonstrable experience in management accounting, including ability to provide detailed guidance and advice to finance and non-finance managers within own area.
  • Staff management experience and the ability to plan and organise a range of complex activities and programmes.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS finance experience at a senior level.
  • Experience of report writing.

  • Ability to communicate complex, sensitive or contentious information to a range of audiences using a range of different communication methods.
  • Ability to analyse, interpret and make judgements involving complex facts and situations.
