Job overview

As a Band 3 Healthcare Assistant in the Acute Medical Unit at Basildon Hospital, you will play a vital role in supporting patients who are undergoing or recovering from surgical procedures. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, you will provide essential patient care under the guidance of registered nurses ensuring high standards of care throughout the patient’s hospital journey.

Your duties will include providing pressure area care, recognising abnormal skin conditions, and assessing pain using simple scoring methods, escalating concerns when necessary. You will assist with end-of-life care, prepare equipment for aseptic procedures, and undertake simple wound dressings.

You will support patients during clinical procedures, ensuring dignity and comfort, and assist with oxygen delivery, ECG recording, and patient orientation to the ward.

In addition, you will contribute to the smooth running of the unit, collaborate with the clinical team, and adhere to Trust policies and procedures, ensuring to model the Trust Values at all times: Excellent, Compassionate, Respectful.

Main duties of the job

  • Demonstrate a courteous and helpful approach to patients, relatives and visitors in the clinical area.
  • Carry out assigned clerical tasks as directed by a registered nurse.
  • Promote the corporate image of Mid and South Essex NHS FT to all individuals, groups and organisations, both within the Trust and externally to the community at large.
  • Participate fully as a team member, sharing knowledge and information and supporting colleagues, to promote a cohesive ward team and the achievement of team objectives
  • Report untoward incidents and any other relevant information to a registered nurse immediately.
  • Inform a registered nurse if asked to carry out a task which the individual does not have the training or capacity to do.
  • To attend to the personal needs of patients/clients by undertaking the following tasks encouraging self-care maintaining privacy and dignity, cultural and spiritual needs at all times.

Essential criteria
  • Care Certificate
  • Completion of a competency-based workbook or equivalent relevant experience to vocational training level 3

Knowledge and experience
