Job overview

The Estates Department operate and maintain, energy and environmental resources, controls, electrical and mechanical services providing power, lighting, heating, air conditioning to wards, outpatients and operating theatres.  Estates directly impacts on patient welfare, frontline clinical care, infection prevention and control and energy efficiency and sustainability across the Trust.  

We have an exciting opportunity for a committed highly self-motivated individual, the Royal Marsden is looking for an Intern Undergraduate Engineer to join the Estates Team on a 1-year placement from July 2025.

This is a highly  valuable broad ranging role allowing the Undergraduate to find their feet in a real working environment, which will expose the Undergraduate to the whole range of Estates services including mechanical, electrical, building & energy control systems and project management.  The candidate must be highly proactive in developing their technical knowledge in all aspects of training and work undertaken, engage in active discussions about skills, techniques, methods and approach to tasks in order to develop as a skilled professional.  

This role requires working in a live Hospital site which will provide excellent opportunities to gain valuable work experience, behaviour at all times must be conducted  in a professional manner and consistent with Trust Values. 

Main duties of the job

The Estates Department is responsible for providing the safe execution of planned, reactive, and emergency maintenance and minor capital works for The RMH Trust. The post holder will assist the Energy Manager in providing a safe, efficient and effective service to patients, staff and visitors.

The Undergraduate Engineer will assist the Energy Manager monitor the Royal Marsden Trust energy and environmental resources minimising its impact on the environment. Will assist Estates Project Managers and Estates Managers /Officers with supporting the management of the Estate, delivery of Estates services and management of projects. The post holder will gain valuable work experience in project management and estate & facilities management. Site inspections, surveys and investigations. Supervising and overseeing contractors, consultants and works and liaising with Trust staff and user departments.

  • To collate and input energy and utility meter readings data onto computer databases e.g. liaising with trade operatives who take meter readings and analysing demand profiles and identifying most economic /beneficial tariff with support from Energy Manager.
  • With the assistance of the Energy Manager establish an energy monitoring and targeting system. e.g. identifying cost centres and plant /services to be monitored and identifying these on plans as necessary.
  • Manage  small  projects  and  life  cycle  /backlog  maintenance  works  and  assist  in  the management of capital projects, Trust Minor New Works and Estates New Works Requests from inception to final account such as refurbishment of office and operational accommodation to current standards /regulations or managing the replacement of a building water tank and associated pipework
  • Will provide a monthly energy usage report to the Energy Manager showing variances from target.
  • With the assistance of the Energy Manager undertake analysis of boiler efficiency each month.

  • Completed 1st year degree without re-sits (Mechanical / Electrical / Building Services Engineering degree)
